  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • Must have professional knowledge of theories, principles and practices in chemistry, and established laboratory methodologies sufficient to perform the full range of duties for chemical and physical analysis and testing of a variety of samples.
  • Must possess skills to calibrate, operate and maintain proficiency in the operation of standard laboratory instrumentation.
  • Must have ability to conduct studies and analyses utilizing atomic absorption spectrometry.
  • Work involves prolonged standing, but includes walking, bending and some climbing.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lb.
  • Work environment is primarily a laboratory setting, with regular and recurring exposure to irritants and chemicals.
  • Laboratory safety procedures and protective clothing are required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid state driver license and maintain on-base driving privileges once obtained.
  • Subject to callback for work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Callbacks are often of an emergency nature and employee is expected to be available for work. Callback and emergency overtime are requirements of this position.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Establish standard operating procedures, programs and policies to reach the goals of the organization. Enforce a quality control, laboratory safety, and hygiene program. Lead subordinate technicians in carrying out assignments to meet established deadlines and teaching them proper wet and instrumental analyses. Perform additional testing as needed.

Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website:

A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
