Learn more about this agency Requirements Conditions of Employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position requires that the incumbent work up to 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays. This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Must sign DA Form 5019 acknowledging both pre-appointment and periodic random drug testing requirements. Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position. Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test. Must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State's driver's license. Must be able obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Operator's Certification. Must complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course. Must maintain a functioning telephone to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations. Position designated Mission Essential, required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations. Must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures. Must be able to lift heavy objects of 50 pounds. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. General Experience for GS-3 level: Six months of general experience which included work experience or military service that demonstrated the ability to follow directions and to read, understand, and retain a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures and that otherwise demonstrates the ability to perform or learn to perform the duties of the position. OR Education/Training: One year of education above the high school level related to fire protection and/or prevention OR six months of appropriate firefighter training. OR Combination of Education/Training and Experience: A combination of education/training and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 6. Then divide your semester hours of education by 30 and/or months of firefighter training by 6. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for GS-4 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; AND (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience for GS-5 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted for GS-06 level. Specialized Experience for GS-7 level: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention; AND (7) providing emergency care and basic life support to patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted at GS-07 level. Must successfully, prior to promotion to the GS-04 obtain and maintain Firefighter I Must successfully, prior to promotion to theGS-05 obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II. Must successfully, prior to promotion to the GS-06 obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Operations, Driver Operator - Pumper, Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF). Must successfully, prior to promotion to the GS-07 obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Operations, Driver Operator - Pumper, Driver Operator - Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF), Emergency Medical Technician - Basic, HAZMAT Technician, Driver Operator - Aerial.
