Summary

This announcement is for multiple seasonal Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) positions for Montana Dakotas.

This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred monthly throughout the announcement period. Final application disposition will be completed once all positions have been filled or the announcement reaches the end of the open period stated in the announcement. Qualifications

GS-4: You must possess six (6) months of general experience and six (6) months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-3 level. Examples of general experience may include working in
any professional, technical, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of wildlife in their natural habitat or techniques of collecting scientific data. Examples of specialized experience: Ability to read maps and use GPS equipment to determine locations, computer capabilities sufficient to produce reports with graphics, produce simple maps, develop spreadsheets, and enter,
retrieve and manipulate data.

Education: You must have completed two-years of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the work of this position.
-OR-
Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: include banding, tagging, and releasing wildlife; inventorying rare and endangered species habitat based on guidelines; preforms vegetative work in wildlife habitat; enters and retrieves data to compile reports.

Education: You must have completed a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the work of this position.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

GS-6: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Knowledge of basic principles of wildlife sufficient to evaluate data collected for accuracy, determine causes of variances, and applicability of data to the overall program/project, carry out assignments independently, handling routine problems in accordance with instructions, policies, regulations and other guidance without assistance, constructing wildlife habitat improvement structures; and compiling data obtained through survey/study and assembling the data into a logical sequence for review.

Education: You must have completed one (1) full year of graduate level courses directly related to this position.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this
position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

GS-7: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-6level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: researching, compiling and tabulating a full range of wildlife inventory data; leading or conducting field inventories of wildlife species to develop intensive scientific information; and collecting ecological site information for sensitive, threatened or endangered wildlife.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Education

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until May 30, 2025.

  • The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be October 15, 2024, 11:59 PM (EST) and then every month, until positions are filled or announcement closes. If the position(s) are no longer needed prior to the closing date, this announcement may be closed early.
  • Eligible applications received prior to each cut-off date will be referred to offices requesting certificates during that period.
