Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
Must be able to pass a firefighters physical agility test.
This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
Position requires lifting up to 85 pounds.
This position requires a work schedule of 72 hours weekly/144 biweekly.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) performing firefighting work that involves the use of firefighting and fire prevention techniques and methods such as performing search and rescue, operating hose lines and performing ventilation; 2) scheduling and/or conducting inspections, test and or preventive maintenance service on fire apparatus or firefighting equipment and 3) assisting in a fire prevention program, emergency medical technician program or hazardous material response program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-9).
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS: This position requires you to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, International Fire Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) equivalent certifications: (Please note: All certifications must be uploaded at time of application):-
- Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II and HAZMAT Incident Command.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification at the Basic or higher level issued by the State of Illinois or National Registry. (You MUST submit a copy of your certification.)
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
