  • This position requires Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
  • Must possess and maintain American Heart Association OR American Red Cross Basic Life Support Healthcare prover, and CPR.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Must possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience possessing and applying a professional knowledge of the principles, concepts and methodology set forth by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) within their Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification (CSCS) gained from certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist or Exercise Physiologist/Athletic Trainer in order to assess/analyze
    individuals to determine effective programs of physical fitness, promote health, and ensure safety during participation in exercise.
  • Experience possessing knowledge, skills and ability in the Scientific Foundations and Practical/Applied aspects of strength and conditioning to provide training on improving athletic performance, provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention.
  • Experience possessing and applying knowledge of governing fitness and Physical Training (PT) programs, strength and conditioning techniques and principles, including core strength/stability, energy system development, multidirectional strength and power development, plyometric, and balance and nutrition, anatomy, medical terminology and procedures
  • Experience possessing and applying the ability to administer health screening and fitness assessments, exercise prescription, progressive individual fitness programs, and demonstrating proper exercise techniques.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

There are no educational substitutions for basic education requirements. Basic education requirements are required for this position. However, the following are educational substitutions for specialized experience.

GS-9:
Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree
OR
Successful completion of master's or equivalent graduate degree

NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.

This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Temporary duty travel may be required up to 10% of the time.

Work requires lifting potentially heavy weights, squatting, sitting, running, jumping, bending, walking, and hiking over rough terrain with long periods of standing during a typical eight hour work day. Requires strength, coordination and stamina to manage and operate a wide variety of exercise equipment as well as to bend, lift, and manipulate loads and plates over 55 pounds. Physical conditioning must be sufficient to demonstrate all prescribed exercises and techniques.

Work may be performed in office buildings or pools. Work may also be performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, austere environments and rough terrain. Work involves moderate risks or discomforts and requires safety precautions and wearing and use of personal protective equipment typical of a human performance facility setting.

In accordance with BUMEDINST 6220.9B, all personnel, including direct and indirect care providers, administrators, ancillary services, volunteers, students, and others who may come in contact with patients, must receive and maintain appropriate vaccination against seasonal influenza. The incumbent must, as a condition of employment, be immunized on an annual basis against influenza. Refer to local command influenza instruction. This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
