Learn more about this agency Requirements Conditions of Employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment. This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident. This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled. The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time. This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Position requires employee to remain clean-shaven to insure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus. Position requires a work schedule of 72 hours a week, and 144 hours per pay period. Position requires 24-hour rotating shifts. Incumbent may be required to work overtime as the need arises. Employee must maintain current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card. For the GS-07 position - Within twelve (12) months of appointment, must obtain and maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels: Driver/Operator ARFF (Airport Rescue Firefighting) and Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply certifications. For the GS-06 position - Within twelve (12) months of appointment, must obtain and maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels: Airport Firefighter and Hazardous Materials Technician. For the GS-05 position - Within twelve (12) months of appointment, must obtain and then maintain National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic license. For the GS-05 position - Within twelve (12) months of appointment, must obtain the following DoD Fire and Emergency Services Fire Fighter Certifications: Hazardous Materials Operations and Driver/Operator Pumper certifications. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) assisting with lifting firefighting equipment or climbing standard ladders to assist with rescue and 2) assisting crew members with firefighting techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves : 1) the use of firefighting and fire prevention techniques and methods such as performing search and rescue; 2) use of firefighting equipment, and 3) performing basic life support functions, to include stabilizing a patient, performing CPR, using an AED, airway management and treating for shock. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) work that involves the use of firefighting and fire prevention techniques and methods such as performing search and rescue, operating hose lines and performing ventilation; 2) use of firefighting equipment to include driving and operating a full range of emergency services apparatus such as pumpers and aerial trucks; perform hazard assessment and/or conduct fire prevention inspections; 3) use of HAZMAT control procedures containing spills and leaks, applying absorbents, and operating various meters; 4) perform basic life support functions and medical protocols such as performing patient assessment, stabilizing a patient, performing CPR, using an AED, airway management and treating for shock. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). This position has selective placement factors: Certifications issued by the Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard.
