WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR

We seek a high performing LEAD Data Engineer to play a critical role in the development of Nike's Data Engineering capabilities. You will be part of an organization focusing on the development and delivery of data solutions and capabilities to help drive the growth of one of Nike's fastest growing geographies, Asia Pacific Latin America. The successful candidate is motivated by thinking big data, technically proficient, and enjoys working in a fast paced environment.

WHAT YOU WILL WORK ON

As a Lead Data Engineer for Nike's APLA Data Engineering team, you will drive deliverables to completion with hands-on development responsibilities, and partner with the Engineering Manager to provide thought leadership and innovation with those deliverables.

In this role, you will:
  • Design and implement data products and features in collaboration with product owners, data analysts, and business partners using Agile / Scrum methodology
  • Contribute to overall architecture, frameworks and patterns for processing and storing large data volumes
  • Evaluate and use new technologies/tools/frameworks centered around high-volume data processing
  • Drive the implementation of new data projects and the optimization of existing solutions
  • Translate product backlog items into engineering designs and logical units of work
  • Profile and analyze data for the purpose of designing scalable solutions
  • Define and apply appropriate data acquisition and consumption strategies for given technical scenarios
  • Design and implement distributed data processing pipelines using tools and languages prevalent in the big data ecosystem
  • Build utilities, user defined functions, libraries, and frameworks to better enable data flow patterns
  • Implement sophisticated automated routines using workflow orchestration tools
  • Drive collaborative reviews of designs, code, and test plans
  • Work with architecture, engineering leads and other teams to ensure quality solutions are implemented, and engineering best practices are defined and followed
  • Anticipate, identify and tackle issues concerning data management to improve data quality
  • Build and incorporate automated unit tests and participate in integration testing efforts
  • Utilize and advance continuous integration and deployment frameworks
  • Solve complex data issues and perform root cause analysis
  • Collaborate closely with Product team counterparts
  • Work across teams to resolve operational & performance issues
  • Provide work estimates and represent work progress and challenges
  • Identify and remove technical bottlenecks for your engineering squad
  • Provide leadership, guidance and mentorship to other data engineers
WHO WILL YOU WORK WITH

In this role, you will be part of an agile scrum team, closely partnering with the Product Manager, Engineering Manager, Scrum Masters and other team members to deliver data and analytics capabilities to Nike's Asia Pacific Latin America data engineering organization. You will collaboratively partner with business stakeholders and other technology solution delivery, architecture, and platform teams.

WHAT YOU BRING

We are looking for extraordinary talent that brings the following key skills and experience to this role:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, or related technical discipline, or combination of relevant education, training and experience
  • 7+ years of experience in large-scale software development, 3+ years of data engineering experience
  • Strong programming experience, Python or Scala preferred
  • Experience designing, estimating and implementing complex software projects
  • Extensive experience working with Hadoop and related processing frameworks such as Spark, Hive, etc.
  • Experience with data warehousing concepts, SQL and SQL Analytical functions
  • Experience with messaging/streaming/complex event processing tooling and frameworks with an emphasis on Spark Streaming or Apache Nifi
  • Experiece in pub/sub modes like Kafka
  • Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools like Apache Airflow
  • Experience with source code control tools like Github
  • Extensive experience with performance and scalability tuning
  • Ability to lead others in solving complex problems
  • Ability to influence and communicate optimally, both verbally and written, with team members and business stakeholders
  • Interest in and ability to quickly pick up new languages, technologies, and frameworks
  • Experience participating in key business, architectural and technical decisions
  • Experience providing guidance and mentorship to other engineers
  • Experience in Agile/Scrum application development

The following skills and experience are also relevant to our overall environment, and nice to have:

  • Experience working in a public cloud environment, particularly AWS
  • Experience with cloud warehouse tools like Snowflake and Databricks Lakehouse
  • Experience working with NoSQL data stores such as DynamoDB
  • Experience building RESTful API's to enable data consumption
  • Experience with build tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation and automation tools such as Jenkins
  • Experience with practices like Continuous Development, Continuous Integration and Automated Testing
