Laborie Medical Technologies is currently searching for an Associate Director of Engineering to join our Salt Lake City, UT team.
Position Overview:
The Associate Director of Engineering position is responsible for Manufacturing Engineering, Machine Maintenance, CNC Shop, Mold Engineering, and Process Engineering for medical devices for the Maternal and Children's Health Business Unit at LABORIE. This position has key responsibilities in the areas of customer complaint investigation and CAPA (initiation, evaluation, disposition, and approval) as required. The Engineering Associate Director is part of the Plant Leadership Team and will need to ensure cross-functional alignment of departmental work activities and corporate efforts that drive both long term and short-term strategy execution.
The ideal incumbent for the Associate Director of Engineering role is a hands-on professional; capable and interested in building the business and leveraging his/her existing network of medical device contacts to drive operational improvements, new technologies, and successful product development processes.
How you contribute as an Associate Director of Engineering:
Safety - Champions safety improvements and strives for zero accidents.
Quality - Analyzes customer complaints and quality data, studies, tests, and makes recommendations for corrections (CAPA).
Delivery - Optimizes preventive maintenance and daily equipment maintenance and process.
- Partners with R&D, Quality, Regulatory and Operations to meet and often exceed production targets.
- Drives and leads manufacturing and process improvement projects (5S, Kaizen, etc.)
Cost - Establishes and manages department budget
- Leads 5% year over year cost improvement initiatives
- Strategic development, lead, and support automation efforts
People - Directly accountable for coaching and leading the work of 6-10 team members and/or team leaders - including performance management & development planning.
- Delivers clear, compelling, and shared vision for the team.
- Builds and maintains an open, transparent, and psychologically safe environment.
Change Management
- Solicits and channels ideas/feedback to align people behind necessary and desired changes.
- Influences and champions new ideas within Engineering, Molding and across departments.
- Lead by simplifying, prioritizing, and helping the focus to deliver value to the plant and ultimately, end customers.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Engineering or equivalent degree required.
- Minimum of 10 years of manufacturing engineering experience required.
- Experience in the medical device or pharmaceutical manufacturing industry preferred
- 7-10 years of people management/supervision required
- Both exempt and non-exempt team members and >6 direct reports preferred.
- Consistent demonstration in successful Lean and Continuous Improvement implementations.
- Green Belt certification required; Black Belt preferred
- Possess a Growth Mindset - embraces challenges, seeks opportunities for growth, finds lessons and inspiration from others is required.
- Previous experience in new product development processes for innovative new product launches that have a proven track record of meeting and/or exceeding planned objectives is preferred.
- Knowledge of FDA and MDD regulations and medical device quality system (ISO 13485) and compliance standards is highly desired.
- Ability to use various assembly tools and test equipment.
- Injection molding knowledge and/or experience in assessing and understanding plastic materials, resin performance and characteristics would be a plus
- Strong organizational skills including attention to detail and the ability to lead a multitude of priorities; experience handling multiple projects a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for interaction at all levels, both within and outside the company, to achieve goals and objectives.
- Basic computer skills required (MS Office, Outlook). Proficiency with CADD tools is a plus.
- Proven ability to work with a variety of departments and personnel, including influencing without authority, success working in a matrix organization, and as an individual contributor.
