Job Description

Fiduciary Trust International is a premier investment and wealth management firm with a commitment to growing and protecting wealth across generations. We offer a dynamic and collaborative approach to managing wealth for high-net-worth and ultra high-net-worth individuals and families, family offices, endowments, foundations, and institutions. Unlike other firms, our investment managers, tax and estate planning professionals work together to develop holistic strategies to optimize clients’ portfolios while mitigating the impact of taxes on their wealth. As a fiduciary, the guidance we provide is always in the best interests of our clients, without conflict or competing benefits. We offer boutique customization and deep expertise in specialized investment, tax and planning strategies alongside sophisticated technology and custody platforms.

Fiduciary Trust International is owned by Franklin Templeton, a diversified firm that spans asset management, wealth management, and fintech, giving us many ways to help investors make progress toward their goals. With clients in over 150 countries and offices on six continents, you’ll get exposed to different cultures, people, and business development happening around the world.

Fiduciary Trust Company of Canada

Fiduciary Trust Company of Canada (“FTCC”), a nationally regulated Trust Company, and its predecessors have been successfully providing customized discretionary wealth management solutions to affluent Canadians for over 35 years. We are investment counselors and estate planning experts who help clients preserve, grow and transfer their wealth. A trusted and proven private wealth boutique, FTCC is backed by the strength and expertise of a global investment leader, Franklin Templeton, whose roots are well established in the Canadian market and date back to 1954. Since then, we have been committed to one goal: delivering exceptional asset management services to Canadian investors.

The unique combination of Investment Counseling, Investment Management and Personal Trust expertise offered by FTCC, combined with the global scale and expertise of the asset management firms that comprise Franklin Templeton Investments sets us apart from our competitors in our ability to deliver highly customized wealth management solutions to clients and their third-party advisors.

Our collective global investment teams bring specialized expertise across diverse asset classes and serve institutional, retail, and high-net-worth clients.

The Role

FTCC is recruiting for a client focused Associate Portfolio Manager (“APM”) to join our private wealth team, which is responsible for the delivery of investment counseling services to Canadian investors and institutions.

The primary focus of this role should be concentrated in three key areas: relationship management, portfolio management and operational management (admin). The ideal candidate should possess a comprehensive understanding of our operations and be committed to contributing to the growth of our business.

Initiative and Accountability: The APM should proactively take on tasks to alleviate the Portfolio Manager's workload, allowing them to focus on client interactions and business development. We seek an associate who not only handles data in their daily tasks but comprehends the underlying concepts. A knowledgeable associate will independently identify and address potential errors and data discrepancies.

Passion and Knowledge: Building on the previous point, a passionate and knowledgeable associate will inquire about the reasoning behind tasks rather than doing their assignment and simply passing them along to the next person in line. This individual should be proactive in identifying and addressing issues, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Small Accounts Management: We should aim to engage an associate eventually capable of handling smaller accounts under the lead Portfolio Manager. This individual would be valuable in servicing younger clients and/or children of existing clients who may not meet our minimum requirements. The associate can effectively cater to these clients through virtual interactions exclusively.

In summary, the APM role necessitates an individual who is not only proficient in the technical aspects of portfolio management but is also driven by a genuine passion for the financial markets and a proactive approach to problem-solving. This approach will ensure that the associate actively contributes to the success and integrity of our operations.

Associate Portfolio Manager (APM)

We are seeking highly motivated candidates for the role of Associate Portfolio Manager, a dynamic position that combines relationship management, portfolio management and operations management. This role is designed to provide a comprehensive training ground for a junior investment professional who aspires to build a career in the private wealth management industry. The APM will play a pivotal role in assisting lead PMs.

Client Relationship Management:

    • Interact directly with HNW clients, managing follow-up and ongoing client deliverables.

    • Partner with PMs to understand clients, attend client meetings at times, and prioritize client goals while developing solutions.

    • Establish and maintain client contact, acting as a key point of contact for clients and their advisors.

    • Take on increasing responsibility for smaller client relationships as experience grows, allowing PMs to focus on larger and more complex client relationships; and

    • Build awareness for the firms’ capabilities and assist in business development opportunities and events.

Operational and Administrative Support:

  • Maintain awareness of client account activity, including systematic withdrawals, deposits, fee withdrawals, overdraft, raising cash, etc.;

    • Review account openings, analyze relevant document to begin KYC and ensure proper administration of accounts;

    • Maintain follow ups and ensure key metrics are met by PMs (minimal annual review per client, ensure updated Investment Policy Statements, etc); and

    • Collaborate with private client service associates to ensure that clients are onboarded in a smooth and seamless way.

Portfolio Management

    • Incorporate Investment Strategy Committee (“ISC”) views in portfolios and ensure compliance with their respective targets and current tactical asset allocation;

    • Review accounts, suggest appropriate actions to uphold asset allocation and ISC views;

    • Develop and maintain deep understanding of investment products and strategies;

    • Understand different account types (RRSP, TFSA, Corp, LIRA, etc);

    • Assist in the development and implementation of Investment Policy Statements and Investment Proposals for new and existing clients;

    • Liaise with Performance department and portfolio administrators to ensure portfolios are properly set up for performance measurement, including benchmarks and composites;

    • Prepare presentations for proposal and client review meetings. Understand concepts that the PM wants to present to clients and proactively adjust the presentations accordingly; and

    • Sign off on trade recommendations compiled by the Analyst/Trader and provide back up for this function as required.

Qualifications/skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent

    • At least three years of relevant portfolio management experience supporting clients in a wealth management team;

    • Must be able to register as an Advising Representative or Associate Advising Representative with provincial Securities Commissions;

    • Progress or completion of a Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and/or Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designation would be considered an asset.

    • Must be fluent in French, both verbally and written,

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills;

    • Detail oriented, ability to work independently and proactively

    • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software;

    • Prior experience managing high net worth clients in a servicing/sales capacity; and

    • Strong analytical and relationship building skills.

Description de l'emploi

  • Se tenir au courant de l'activitĂ© des comptes clients, y compris les retraits systĂ©matiques, les dĂ©pĂ´ts, les retraits de frais, les dĂ©couverts, l'augmentation des liquiditĂ©s, etc ;

    • Examiner les ouvertures de compte, analyser les documents pertinents pour commencer le KYC et assurer la bonne gestion des comptes ;

    • assurer le suivi et veiller Ă  ce que les principaux paramètres soient respectĂ©s par les GP (examen annuel minimal par client, mise Ă  jour des dĂ©clarations de politique d'investissement, etc

    • Collaborer avec les associĂ©s du service Ă  la clientèle privĂ©e pour s'assurer que l'intĂ©gration des clients se fait de manière fluide et sans heurts.

Gestion de portefeuille

  • IntĂ©grer les points de vue du comitĂ© de stratĂ©gie d'investissement (CSI) dans les portefeuilles et veiller au respect de leurs objectifs respectifs et de la rĂ©partition tactique actuelle des actifs ;

  • Examiner les comptes, suggĂ©rer des actions appropriĂ©es pour maintenir l'allocation d'actifs et les vues du CSI ;

  • DĂ©velopper et maintenir une comprĂ©hension approfondie des produits et stratĂ©gies d'investissement ;

  • Comprendre les diffĂ©rents types de comptes (REER, CELI, sociĂ©tĂ©, CRI, etc.) ;

  • Participer Ă  l'Ă©laboration et Ă  la mise en Ĺ“uvre des dĂ©clarations de politique d'investissement et des propositions d'investissement pour les clients nouveaux et existants ;

  • Assurer la liaison avec le dĂ©partement de la performance et les administrateurs de portefeuille pour veiller Ă  ce que les portefeuilles soient correctement configurĂ©s pour la mesure de la performance, y compris les indices de rĂ©fĂ©rence et les composites ;

  • BaccalaurĂ©at ou Ă©quivalent

  • Au moins trois ans d’expĂ©rience pertinente de soutien des clients dans le cadre de la gestion de portefeuille, au sein d’une Ă©quipe de gestion du patrimoine;

  • ĂŠtre en mesure de s'inscrire en tant que reprĂ©sentant-conseil ou reprĂ©sentant-conseil associĂ© auprès des commissions provinciales des valeurs mobilières ;

  • La progression ou l'achèvement d'un titre d'analyste certifiĂ© en gestion des investissements (CIMA), d'analyste financier agrĂ©Ă© (CFA), de planificateur financier agrĂ©Ă© (CFP) et/ou de gestionnaire de placements canadien (CIM) serait considĂ©rĂ© comme un atout ;

  • Solides compĂ©tences en matière de communication orale et Ă©crite ;
