THE ROLE
Work with department head and specialists to contribute to the success of the Photographs department in New York. The focus will be on building market expertise, with focused attention on in-depth research and cataloguing.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate Specialist Responsibilities:
- Study with department specialists to develop personal expertise in Photographs market knowledge
- Assist with estimate requests, walk-in appointments and trade clients; work with specialists on valuations and follow-up on property that has been estimated but not yet consigned for sale
- Liaise with department administrator and specialists to ensure clear communication regarding consignments
- Actively participate in all presale exhibitions and events, speaking to clients about the property; Develop, track and communicate interest in lots
- Assist with pre-sale and post-sale marketing and press write-ups, and proposal write-ups
- Find and develop new opportunities to increase transactions on both consignment and selling side of the business
- Actively participate in growing e-commerce market for photographs
- As experience develops, handling consignments from start to finish: from valuation of material, to preparation of a sale proposal, to negotiation with client
- Handle ad-hoc projects as requested by management
Researcher responsibilities:
- Catalogue, research and write notes for photographs scheduled for auction and private sale
- Perform thorough literature and provenance checks, vetting information provided by clients
- Manage and grow department relationships with external experts, including museum curators, independent scholars, librarians, and estates
- Perform physical inspections of property and write condition reports
- Proof-read all catalogue, editorial, and marketing text
- Manage special projects as required
IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES
- Educational background in Art History or a related discipline; prior experience and interest in Photographs preferred
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated
- Ability to prioritize multiple highly important processes and responsibilities and meet deadlines
- Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to establish close working relationships with internal support staff including administrators, operations, etc.
- Excellent client service, including verbal and written skills
- Excellent team player
- Requires flexibility in work hours as needed
The proposed base salary for this position ranges from $60,000-$70,000. In addition to base salary successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus, as well as a competitive benefits package. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered.
