Summary

The position serves as the Community Supervision Officer, located in the Office of Community Supervision and Intervention Services within Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for the District of Columbia (CSOSA). CSOSA provides community supervision of adult offenders released by the DC Superior Court or the United States Parole Commission on probation, parole and supervised release in the District of Columbia.

  • The position is Mission Essential. Mission Essential employees must report for, or remain at, work in emergencies; dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to them unless their supervisor instructs otherwise.
  • All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments directly deposited into a financial institution of their choosing.
  • CSOSA uses E-Verify, if you are selected for this position, the documentation that you present for purposes of completing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Form I-9 will be verified through the DHS "E-Verify" System.
  • Bargaining Unit Status: Eligible. This position is represented by the American Federation of Government Employees, Local 0727.
  • MAXIMUM ENTRY AGE: The maximum entry age for this position is 37 years of age at the time of acceptance of employment unless the applicant has prior Federal service in a covered law enforcement position.
  • You will be required to attend all on-site (8 to 10 weeks) training for the Community Supervision Officers Academy. The Academy will tentatively start on Monday, October 21, 2024. FULL PARTICIPATION IS REQUIRED.
  • This is not a virtual or remote position; you must live within or be willing to relocate within a commutable distance of the duty location which is Washington D.C. (District of Columbia).

Qualifications

This position has a positive education and/or experience requirement. You may qualify at the GL-09 level if you fulfill one of the following basic qualification requirements:

A. Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in the behavioral or social sciences, or in a related discipline that included at least 24 semester/36 quarter hours in the behavioral or social sciences.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR

C. Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had specialized experience and/or directly related education. Education and experience may be combined to meet the total experience requirements.

1. The applicant must have completed two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree when it provided the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

2. One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL-7 grade level. Specialized experience is the experience in or related to the line of work of the position to be filled and has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties successfully. Such experience includes the ability to investigate the background of criminal offenders in order to identify factors that determine their level of risk related to public safety. Developing a supervision plan, setting priorities, and making appropriate referrals to social service programs.

OR

3. Combination of Graduate Education and Professional Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate-level education above the first 18 semester hours of a course of study leading to a master's degree may be combined with experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Unless otherwise stated: (1) official or unofficial transcripts are acceptable, or (2) you may submit a list with all of your courses, grades, semester, year, and credit for the course. All materials must be submitted by the closing date of the announcement.
PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.
GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
