We are living through a rapid shift in media consumption, from print to audio and video. Unlike the word processor, the creation tools for audio and video are complicated, slow, and require an ongoing diet of training.
Descript aims to solve that problem, taking advantage of the recent explosion in speech recognition accuracy to press the reset button on how talk-driven media is created. With podcasting, screen recording, transcription, and video tools, Descript provides a suite of products for creators and business teams to create high-quality content faster and better.
Opportunity for ImpactAs Descript continues to build out its suite for creative professionals and grows its presence in the enterprise business market, we are looking for a Product Marketing leader who is passionate about communicating the value of our platform across a number of use cases. This Head of Product Marketing will highlight the powers of collaboration, feedback, publishing, education, and multi-media marketing content among other applications of Descript.
This person thrives on bringing together data, customer feedback, and product knowledge to uncover new opportunities and lead insight-driven go-to-market plans. They will not only work closely with the CMO, they will also be a thought partner to the founder/CEO, Andrew Mason, who is a Groupon co-founder. The Head of Product Marketing will also lead and build a team of product marketing managers in key segments for Descript.
Role & Responsibilities- Lead our quarterly GTM product launches (Season Events) for both users and soon-to-be users. Find creative ways to showcase the use cases and outcomes. Build and optimize a repeatable playbook for these events.
- Define a relevant and timely set of features and functional value propositions for our product portfolio. Applying your understanding of the customer, domain, and marketing experience to tell a compelling story that resonates with our target audiences. Revisit these on an ongoing basis.
- Package and summarize product and customer insights to share with the marketing, product, and executive team. Lead with a point of view on user wants, needs, and journey along with a recommended set of actions to follow.
- Persona development of our target users using a structured taxonomy both internally and externally. Clear distinctions across use cases, our customers, and customer types. Own the validation, refinement, and implementation across the company.
- Bring deep product and customer understanding, and build a close partnership with the product from the earliest stages of product development. Work with our product management team to give feedback to optimize the go-to-market on features and ongoing releases. Plan for new product rollouts from Beta to release for go-to-market
- Maintain, update and extend the product marketing website pages for new features, launches, and customer segments with your team. Maintain a high-quality bar throughout the process. Align resources in brand design, copywriting, and your own deep domain expertise to work collaboratively to organize and structure the website pages.
- Lead strategy and execution of templates and other asset-based initiatives to drive a deeper level of engagement with high-intent traffic. Prioritize, define, and execute these projects with cross-functional collaboration across brand design and product.
- Build product-led growth loops to support sales cycles. Work with our customer success and marketing content teams to deliver external product updates, sales assets, and initiatives.
- Track product usage to develop targeted programs with the marketing team

- Experienced in product marketing (5+ years) with proven results
- Management experience (2+ years) required
- Experience in a high-growth B2B/B2C2B SaaS businessÂ
- Familiarity and success in business models where product usage drives customer acquisition, retention, and expansion
- Experience converting freemium users and has built PLG loops to support sales cycles
- Understanding of different customer personas, customer journeys and uses cases for each price point. For Descript, this includes individual creative professionals up to large enterprises (marketing, sales, L&D teams)
- Has owned overarching value props, relevant feature/benefits, personas, developing new segments, GTM coordination for the marketing team, website content for products with multiple use cases.Â
- Can build the taxonomy of the customers and types for communicating internally and externally
- Can be a detailed project manager to ensure a great product launch across all stages - from Beta to GA
- Has shaped an emerging portfolio strategy to unify the growing suite of solutions across the organization
- Can deliver an ongoing series of compelling customer stories that highlight in the voice of the customer the clear and tangible value delivered by our portfolioÂ
- Customer insight and empathy - understand and speak in the voice of our customers                     Â
- Familiarity and success in business models where product usage drives customer acquisition, retention, and expansion
- Experience working with/using Amplitude, Google Analytics, Braze (or other email marketing and in-product messaging tools), Webflow, Figma, and Segment is a plus
- Experience with creator-oriented tools (design, 3D, audio/video) is a plus
- Product management experience is a plus

The base salary range for this role is $175,000- $220,000/year. Final offer amounts will carefully consider multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, location, and may vary from the amount above.

We are a team of 100 — with a proven CEO and the backing of some of the world's greatest investors (OpenAI, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Spark Capital). Descript HQ is in San Francisco, and our AI research team, Lyrebird, is based in Montreal.
