About Klaviyo

Klaviyo is a unified customer platform for email, SMS, and more that helps businesses of every size own their marketing, customer relationships, data, and destiny. Klaviyo has helped hundreds of thousands of businesses grow by fostering customer relationships and generating billions of dollars in eCommerce purchases. In 2022, Klaviyo was recognized by Glassdoor as a Best Place to Work in the U.S. small and medium company category and by Comparably as one of the Best Engineering Teams and Product & Design Teams.

About the Team

Our engineers are organized into a series of product pillars, where multiple teams are contributing to the goals of a larger mission. This role sits within the Intelligence pillar which focuses on two main goals: helping customers understand where their business is currently, as well as helping them predict and plan for where they want to grow in the future.

The Product Merchandising team powers one of the most important data science functionalities at Klaviyo: the dynamic product block. We’re starting to explore a variety of additional ways to leverage the data in our product catalog integrations to enable our customers to learn and act on more signals coming through their catalog performance. We are currently working to increase the throughput of product recommendations, which requires significant re-architecting of portions of the system.

We are proud of our data and our goal is to harness that wealth of numbers and present them to our customers in a way that is actionable, intuitive, and accessible. In the Intelligence pillar, software engineers and data scientists work together to take ideas from inception to new machine learning-powered features.

About the Role:

As an Engineering Manager for our Product Merchandising team, you will be responsible for people management of all engineering team members within that group. You will work hand-in-hand with the Technical Product Owner and Product Manager to set the technical priorities and roadmap, and will be primarily responsible for ensuring the pace and quality of technical execution. You will help the team grow both as individuals and as a team by sharing and encouraging the adoption of best practices, both from a team process perspective as well as from a technical approach perspective. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about developing others to help foster each person’s growth and level up technical skills.

In addition, the Product Merchandising team interacts with several other areas of the product such as the commerce service that houses our catalog data and the templates team that renders product recommendations. The new EM will be critical in coordinating the technical execution of all of these cross-company projects.

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Build data pipelines that ingest and process billions of customer events
  • Collaborate with data scientists to deploy machine learning solutions powered by billions of customer events
  • Deploy features that help more than a hundred thousand companies communicate effectively with their customers and grow their business
  • Contribute to the back-end development of features
  • Be a leader in system design; provide technical direction and mentorship to more junior team members

Technologies we use (not comprehensive):

  • Python
  • numpy, pandas, sklearn
  • Django, sqlalchemy
  • ECS, Aurora, Kafka, SQS

What you’ll need:

  • High level of Python proficiency
  • Ability to coach and mentor team members on their technical growth
  • Project management skills, delivering complex projects on time
  • Proficient communication skills, able to speak to different stakeholders fluently
  • Previously led a team (possibly technical leadership)
  • Has delivered / maintained a high throughput system in production
  • Has collaborated cross-functionally on a large project, especially with product/design

Nice to Have:

  • Front-end experience (React)
  • Machine learning experience preferably recommender systems
  • Previously managed direct reports
