- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must comply with Federal and Dept. of Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Position is subject to pre-employment screening, and random testing, including testing based on reasonable suspicion and direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent is required to report or remain at work as scheduled during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations as required to support the mission operations.
- This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid government and state driver's license.
- This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) up to 10% of the time away from the current duty location.
- Incumbent will be required to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working weekends and holidays.
- New hires must pass the record Physical Ability Test (PAT) and must pass the PAT annually thereafter. (A minimum of four months must pass between calendar years for annual PATs.)
- This position requires the incumbent to pass a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fitness Test.
- Incumbent must pass a pre-employment medical physical exam and annually thereafter.
- The employee must obtain Driver Operator-ARFF, Driver Operator-Aerial, and Driver Operator-MWS certifications within 12 months of being placed into the position.
- Incumbent must participate in the department's wellness program to include a structured physical exercise program.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. At the GS-4 level, the incumbent works in a developmental capacity performing assignments and completing training, both of which are aimed in preparing the incumbent to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the full duties of the position.
GS-4
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes classroom training or courses in Fire Science or basic firefighting; or on-the-job training associated with the use of fire equipment, fire safety or firefighting. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-5
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer or governmental fire department or brigade performing the following tasks: Performing rescue operations; operation of fire equipment; and prevent loss of life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.
GS-6
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling and extinguishing fires; operation of fire communications equipment; experience operating emergency vehicles under adverse weather and/or traffic conditions; and experience performing patient examination and providing prompt and efficient patient care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS-6, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
GS-7
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents and (6) experience performing patient examination and providing prompt and efficient patient care. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For the GS-7, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Additional Qualifications Required:
The Department of Defense (DoD) requires the incumbent of this position to possess & maintain the following certifications, accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or the National Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board).
For each certification listed, you must submit a copy with your application package or you will be rated ineligible:
GS-05: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Airport Firefighter. You MUST submit CURRENT copies of the required certifications with your application or you will be rated ineligible. NOTE: These certifications must have been awarded by the DoD, IFSAC, or Pro-Board accredited training to meet this requirement. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification MUST be issued by The National Registry or a state with National Registry reciprocity.
GS-06: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, and HAZMAT Technician. Also, you must possess and maintain State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Certification. You MUST submit CURRENT copies of the required certifications with your application or you will be rated ineligible. NOTE: These certifications must have been awarded by the DoD, IFSAC, or Pro-Board accredited training to meet this requirement. GS-07: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Technician, and Driver Operator-Pumper. You MUST submit CURRENT copies of the required certifications with your application or you will be rated ineligible. NOTE: These certifications must have been awarded by the DoD, IFSAC, or Pro-Board accredited training to meet this requirement. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification MUST be issued by The National Registry or a state with National Registry reciprocity.
