Under the supervision of the Head of Manager Selection and working closely with the Chief Investment Officer and other team members, the Investment Manager is responsible for sourcing and maintaining a pipeline of investment opportunities and funds, conducting thorough investment due diligence on the most compelling prospective opportunities including analysis of investment strategy, process, organization, portfolio positions and performance, and monitoring existing manager relationships. Works on a collaborative team to identify top-tier investment partners globally who consistently outperform benchmarks and enable HMH to exceed our target returns. Works closely with the Portfolio Construction team to evaluate current and prospective managers to ensure adherence to investment policy guidelines, asset allocation objectives, risk management controls, and performance benchmarks.
Based on the assigned area(s), one or more of the following would apply:
- Bottom-up manager sourcing, conducting due diligence, and monitoring efforts to enhance investment performance and drive alpha opportunities across public and private asset classes. Work on a collaborative team to identify top-tier investment partners globally who consistently outperform benchmarks and enable HMH to exceed our target returns.
- Work closely across teams within the Investment Office (IO) to evaluate current and prospective manager performance, identify potential tactical opportunities, generate new ideas, and evaluate important trends, products, and strategies to optimize investment returns.
- Assist the Risk and Operations team in the underlying operating protocols and procedures that provide adequate controls and help review and analyze performance reporting.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Investment Manager at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Assist in sourcing, evaluating, and recommending investment partners across a broad range of asset classes.
- Working with IO leaders, develop a pipeline of investment opportunities and funds.
- Partner with other IO teams to complete a comprehensive diligence process and prepare investment memos.
- Support quantitative framework used to guide portfolio construction, asset allocation processes, and analytical insight needed to help understand portfolio manager, hedge fund, and private equity returns where assigned and appropriate.
- Conduct research related to HMH's portfolio, emerging investment areas, and additional topics related to asset allocation where assigned and appropriate.
- Attend meetings with existing and prospective managers, run analysis, and organize preparation materials where assigned and appropriate.
- Partner with the IO Risk and Ops team to negotiate fee agreements and legal documents with investment partners where assigned and appropriate.
- Support the onboarding of new managers to ensure they are accurately included in all internal systems and that they will be monitored and evaluated according to established schedules and procedures.
- Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of current external investment managers.
- Assist with the preparation of investment performance reports and investment fund information for the Investment Committee, Trustees, and other external constituents and/or audiences.
- Conduct ad hoc studies and projects. Assist in the preparation of position papers for the Investment Committee on various asset classes, investment strategies, investment managers, and the long-term performance of the portfolio.
- Maintain a network with the leading investment practitioners, attending conferences to exchange ideas, and to remain abreast of current trends and industry developments.
- Act as an ambassador to external portfolio managers by informing them of HMH's mission and reinforcing the importance of their work to aid HMH in achieving our ambitious mission.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field with strong academic credentials.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in financial markets, and the investment industry (buy or sell side) with a strong background in risk management, asset allocation, investment strategy, and/or financial systems.
- Must have advanced skills in Excel (VBA a plus), Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
- Strong understanding of all major asset classes and investment strategies.
- Outstanding research, analytical, and intellectual capabilities with the ability to integrate quantitative and qualitative analyses.
- Intellectual curiosity as well as excellent research and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to anticipate issues before they become problems.
- Must be able to juggle multiple assignments and execute effectively and efficiently.
- Self-starter who is highly motivated and independent.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Facilitator and team player who will build relationships and gain the confidence of colleagues.
- Highest level of integrity, honesty, loyalty and commitment.
- Display independent judgment and sound decision-making skills on general activities and willingness to be mentored to develop the foundation of good investment judgment.
- Superior attention to detail.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Master of Business Administration (MBA); Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA); and/or progress toward advanced degree.
- Working knowledge of Bloomberg, and/or other data services.
