Summary
This position is located in Washington Headquarters Services, Facilities Services Directorate, Facilities Operations & Services Division, Facility Services Group, Alterations Work Group (AWG). The AWG performs major and minor buildings and facilities repair in the National Capital Region.

Your background must demonstrate up to a full range of Maintenance Mechanic tasks, which includes Performing common tasks of a Maintenance Mechanic, under close supervision of a supervisor or lead. Have received some training which equipped employee with the knowledge and ability in performing maintenance mechanic duties involving at least two trades for the purpose of building upkeep and maintaining grounds.
You may qualify at the WG-10 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
You must demonstrate a full range of ability in performing Maintenance Mechanic tasks at the intermediate journey level, which includes operating, repairing and maintaining buildings and building support systems including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, electrical, and structural systems with minimal supervision; reading mechanical, electrical and structural drawings and blueprints; and applying techniques for masonry, carpentry, painting, welding, roofing and door systems repair; troubleshoot repairs.
You may qualify at the WG-08 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
You must demonstrate a full range of common Maintenance Mechanic tasks under close supervision of a supervisor or lead, which includes performing maintenance mechanic duties which involves at least two trades used to upkeep buildings, grounds, fixtures, structures and utilities.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.
Job Elements:
Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:
- Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
- Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
- Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
- Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Physical effort/requirements:
Works on hard surfaces or at benches or where material is on supports. May work from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the parts of the systems worked on are in hard to reach places. Required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh 50 to 100 pounds.
Working Conditions:
The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area maybe dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to
inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles. Wearing of proper safety equipment to include respirators and observing safety laws and rules shall be required to accomplish various work tasks.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
