The Job/What You'll Do:

Under the direction of the Director, Payroll & People Operations, the Manager, Payroll Operations will supervise and be involved in the day-to-day operations of the payroll process for our 700+ person business. This role is responsible for ensuring that our internal procedures, projects, and audits support the accurate processing of our payroll and related tax filings. This role will work in close collaboration with all HR functional areas including benefits, systems, projects, client leaders, and third-party vendors, to ensure seamless execution.

We can consider candidates for this position who are able to accommodate a hybrid work schedule and are close to one of our following offices: Concord, CA or Phoenix, AZ.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operation of our multi-state (27+), bi-weekly payroll for approximately 700+ employees (including bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual supplemental pay processing)
  • Manage our Senior Payroll Analyst - train, mentor, lead by example
  • Responsible for the periodic, quarterly, and annual balancing of wages and taxes to ensure accurate agency tax returns, including W2's
  • Research and resolve payroll-related problems, unexpected results or process flaws; recommend solutions or alternate methods to meet requirements
  • Review the payroll accounting entries for accuracy and partner with Finance to resolve any discrepancies or questions.
  • Time and Labor leadership and compliance including accurate accrual, quarterly audits, and annual reporting of time off accruals and expense
  • Ensure proper handling of garnishments, support orders, levies, liens, etc.
  • Manage and develop payroll reporting (cyclical and ad-hoc) to provide relevant and meaningful information to business partners
  • Drive process improvement to improve business effectiveness and efficiencies
  • Preparation of payroll audits (Workers' Compensation, 401k, EEOC, Annual Financials, etc.)
  • Maintains payroll guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.
  • Maintains compliance with Federal, state, and local payroll wage and hour requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Work independently with third party administrators as well as internal HR partners to provide required information on a timely basis
  • Understand proper taxation of employer and employee-paid benefits and ensure proper processing through payroll (HSA, FSA, Medical, Dental, Vision AD&D, Life, STD, LTD, Education, Fitness, etc.)
  • Manage the resolution of tax agency notices and completion of root cause analysis to implement countermeasures to prevent additional occurrences
  • Assist in performing internal control reviews of key business processes
  • Assist the Director, Payroll & People Operations with Workday payroll system updates as needed
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission and values of the organization
  • Respond to inquiries concerning employees' payroll deductions, time-off accruals, hours, wage garnishments and other related topics; assist with resolution of related problems; troubleshoot errors and assists managers with technical matters
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Must exhibit extreme discretion in keeping knowledge confidential
  • Strong tact and diplomacy and the ability to work with all levels of the organization
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Ability to execute under tight deadlines -- High level of initiative, motivation, and drive
  • Results-oriented and demonstrated ability to deliver
  • Works extremely well under pressure
  • Thrives in a busy fast-paced environment

Education & Experience:

  • At least 5-7 years of experience processing payroll
  • Experience with Workday Payroll
  • Proficiency with Excel, with proven ability to utilize features, such as pivot tables, vlookups, auto-filters, etc.
  • Degree in Finance/Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field
  • CPP - Certified Payroll Professional
  • Previous experience managing payroll staff
  • Proficient knowledge in payroll law and industry trends including federal and state payroll law and compliance

Compensation: The Base Salary range for this position is between $110,000-$120,000.

This information reflects a base salary range that AssetMark reasonably expects to pay for the position based on a number of factors which may include job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and actual work location. This position will also be eligible for additional variable incentive compensation and competitive benefits.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US to be considered. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
