JOB DESCRIPTION:

This highly-visible, mission-critical IT leadership position is in Abbott Labs' R&D organization and is responsible for leading a technical team of 5 - 8 software engineers and analysts to build, test, integrate and bring to market innovative software informatics solutions. The Manager - Software Engineering/ Software Development will coordinate and provide oversight to the day-to-day application development activities, and provide the team with appropriate guidance on technical, process, and administrative matters. The role requires the ability to work in an environment that is fast paced, and to apply the best practices in leading a globally distributed software development team using established Agile methodologies.
  • Provides guidance for the design and development of informatics software products. Works closely with senior management to establish product development goals while ensuring market compatibility.
  • Implements research and development programs, policies, and procedures required to support profitable growth.
  • Provides leadership to design/development teams to keep focus.
  • Provides design/development teams with appropriate resources to perform assigned tasks.
  • Interfaces with appropriate internal and external resources to ensure intellectual property is appropriately protected.
  • Interfaces with appropriate internal and external resources (regulatory, customers, etc.) to ensure development programs meet regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Creates and executes project plans, including resource planning, budgeting and timeline.
  • Obtains capital resources to meet company goals.
  • Provides technical assistance for diagnosing design and manufacturing quality problems.
  • Keeps senior management team informed of design/development progress and issues.
  • Guides development and documentation of test plan protocols, standard operating procedures, specifications and test procedures.
  • Participates in review boards for intellectual property, complaints, business unit planning, and others as necessary.
  • Reviews and provides functional approval for project and quality system documentation.
  • Evaluates potential business partners, including physicians, vendors, contract product development and manufacturing companies.
  • Develops and manages organizational plans and resources for the specific department and business units for which they are responsible.
  • Provides mentorship and career development oversight for direct report employees.
  • Coordinates with third-party suppliers of technology, products and talent to advance program objectives.
  • Hires and retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and provides ongoing performance feedback.
  • Sets goals which align to department plans and manages the execution of goals through coaching and mentoring. Maintains a safe and professional work environment.
  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
  • On-site presence, with some options for flexible hours.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% (US and international; Potentially, up to 3 trips per year).


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Required / Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field, such as Computer Science, Informatics, Information Technology, Information Systems or Computer Engineering.
  • 7 years of experience in developing or leading software product development.
  • Deep understanding of modern software development practices, including UX, DevOps, CI/CD and Cybersecurity and toolchain.
  • Deep understanding of Agile software development methodologies, including SCRUM.


Preferred / Ideal / Optional Qualifications:
  • Ideally seeking 10 years' experience (see above and below), out of companies/industries in medical device manufacturing and/or digital healthcare / medical software (Epic, Cerner, or similar).
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, managing a software development team.
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications using open-source tools and technologies.
  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
  • Multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills and ability to hold others accountable.
  • Experience in Atlassian toolchain, including JIRA and Confluence.
  • Experience in building software for the diagnostics or healthcare industry.
