Mass Spec Application Specialist I

Primary Purpose:

This position provides both non-technical and technical support within the mass spectrometry clinical testing laboratory. The Mass Spec Application Specialist II will apply principles of analytical chemistry and biochemistry to validate, verify and help troubleshoot mass spectroscopy based testing in a fast-paced production environment. Must be able to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team with shifting time lines and work assignments. Must have good documentation and communication skills. Works under the direction of Mass Spec Application Specialist II, Application Engineers, Application Developer, Supervisor and Technical Director.

Essential Functions:

Demonstrates a sound understanding of the fundamentals of laboratory procedures, analytical chemistry chromatography, and mass spectroscopy (including LC-MS, GC-MS and ICP-MS).

Performs waived, moderate, and/or highly complex analytic processes without direct supervision.

Uses laboratory procedures and techniques for which he/she is qualified and trained to validate and help troubleshoot new and existing mass spectroscopy based tests and instrumentation

Processes data, verifies accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory computer system, along with appropriate explanatory or interpretive information in a timely manner.

Recognizes unexpected results, errors, and problems with test validations, verifications and instrumentation and escalates as required.

Effectively communicates project progression and any hurdles with technical operations, R&D and other team members and key stakeholders.

Maintains, calibrates and operates lab equipment and instrumentation.

Recognizes when professional service is required and requests service if instrument is covered under a service contract. Otherwise, reports service needs to supervisor for resolution.

Monitors quality control and assists in data collection for QA indicators, as assigned.

Resolves and documents resolution of all QC results which fail lab criteria and institutes corrective action.

Trains new and current employees in procedures and policies

Maintains adequate inventory of reagents and supplies.

Directs work flow activities and reviews daily data reports as assigned.

Assists R&D, clinical operations or support teams with problem solving in regards to test validations and verifications of mass spectroscopy based tests.

Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Other Requirements:

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.

Continuing Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices.
