Job Description
The Payroll Lead will work together with the Accounting Manager to support and maintain the payroll-related record-keeping of the company. Customer.io’s team members are located around the world and are primarily employed via a variety of PEOs.
Some things you’ll do…
- Accurately record and process all payroll related items
- Research and resolve payroll discrepancies, including communicating with employees and PEOs
- Ensure payroll changes are reflected accurately in upcoming pay runs (401k deduction changes, terms, leaves, new hires etc.)
- Process and track all variable related pay (sabbatical, commissions, bonuses)
- Process contractor invoices
- Support our expense reimbursement process
- Review and approve a portion of employee expense reimbursements
- Track employee spend toward various benefit budgets
- Answer payroll-related employee questions
- Perform payroll reconciliations
- Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of payroll and benefits transactions so that we are always “audit ready”
- Support improving our systems and processes to help us operate more effectively and efficiently
- Support with other ad hoc payroll, benefit and/or personnel-related items
- Assist with system implementations to move payroll processes off of PEO’s and in house
- Communicate with our PEO’s regarding all payroll tax correspondence
- Lead and manage our annual 401k plan audit
We’re looking for someone who has…
- 5+ years of experience working in payroll-related roles with varying degrees of responsibilities
- Degree in accounting, finance or relevant field
- Experience working with PEOs and other payroll/employment platforms like Trinet, Remote.com, Velocity Global, Deel, Upwork etc.
- Experience managing in house payroll for at least 100 employees located in various taxing jurisdictions
- Demonstrated intermediate to advanced Excel skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, especially around data accuracy
- Excellent problem-solving skills, though knows when to ask for help or collaboration
- Excellent communication skills
- Comfortable working in a remote-first environment
- Empathetic and recognize that your customers are your fellow team members across all departments of the company, and you seek to provide them with timely answers and assistance

Unlike typical marketing platforms, Customer.io helps businesses increase relevance by using behavioral data: what people do or don’t do when logged in to a web or mobile app.
We are offering a starting salary of $95,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment.
