Position Summary

The Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope is looking for a talented Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Systems Biology. This lab studies drug resistance in leukemia and how the microenvironment contributes to this: leukemia cells can become resistant to drug treatment because they obtain support for their growth and survival from stromal cells in the bone marrow. This lab studies the molecules and mechanisms that are responsible for this type of drug resistance development.

This lab works with leukemia in tissue co-culture with stromal cells, cell imaging, retroviral or lentiviral transduction, Cas/CRISPR knockout, FACS, and mice. Candidates who are interested in following an academic career path, are self-motivated and enjoy the complexity of biological systems are especially encouraged to apply. It is important for us that you can work well with others.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in project planning, experimental design, data generation, data interpretation and evaluation, and communication of results related to our studies how leukemia cells escape eradication by drug treatment;
  • Communication of results includes acquiring manuscript writing skills and publishing papers on the obtained results in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Develop grant writing skills and participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentations at national meetings;
  • Provide guidance to junior lab members, develop new methods and protocols for research and assist with the development of other projects in the lab.
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • A Ph.D. degree in life or biomedical sciences, or a related discipline is required;
  • Experience in working with hematopoietic cells in tissue culture.

Preferred education, experience, and skills:
  • Expertise in glycobiology is an advantage but not required.

  • The location of the lab at the Monrovia Campus of the Beckman Research Institute within the Department of Systems Biology provides many opportunities to interact with others who study leukemias;
