Meet the team:
The Firmware team is responsible for the design and implementation of firmware (wearable transmitter, handheld receiver and sustaining support) at Dexcom. This includes from early research to production platform. The Principal Firmware Engineer is at the fore front of what the team does, trusted to lead technology exploration, and is viewed as the subject matter expert. Additionally, it's expected that Principal Engineer will mentor other engineers and provide technical leadership throughout the development cycle.
Where you come in:
- You are the subject matter expert the team and leadership will rely on your advice when decision time comes
- You can understand the company's goals and constraints and integrate them in your design proposals
- You will be the technical lead for key product development
- You will be responsible for the end-to-end design, from concept to verification, of the firmware architecture that goes in Dexcom products
- You will propose and lead technology explorations, including proof of concepts.
- You will be called on to support other departments to resolve tough problems or when expert advice is needed
- You will be expected to be collaborative, open, transparent, and team-oriented with a focus on team empowerment with shared responsibility and flexibility.
- You will be expected to promote a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
- You are expert at bare metal C programming for embedded ARM microcontrollers; including use of Make and GCC cross compilers
What makes you successful:
- You bring a breath of experience in high-reliability firmware design, including agile development methodology, work closely with scientists and transpose algorithms into efficient firmware design.
- You will work with systems engineering and firmware engineering to architect and define functional requirements.
- You bring experience including the full firmware development life cycle which includes requirements, design, coding, testing and integration of low power systems.
- You have in-depth knowledge and expertise in ultra-low power wireless devices
- You are recognized as a thought leader in your field
- You look forward beyond the current products and envision the next technologies
- You can function autonomously and, at the same time, assist and mentor the engineering team
- You can effectively communicate about technical topics with a wide range of audiences, including leadership and advanced technology teams.
- You understand the specificities of medical device development and incorporate them in your design process

Experience and Education
- Typically requires a Bachelors degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 15+ years related experience or a Masters degree and 10+ years equivalent industry experience or a PhD and 7+ years of experience.
