Pendulum™ is on a mission to improve physical and mental health by creating a new category of products that target the microbiome. We are researching, developing, and commercializing a novel class of rationally-designed Live SynbioticsTM (probiotics + prebiotics) that have demonstrated clinical efficacy to treat conditions like metabolic syndrome, inflammation, and neurodegeneration.

We are seeking a Research Associate to join our Process Development team and support Pendulum’s current and future commercialization efforts. Reporting to one of our Staff Scientists in Process Development, you will operate small-scale fermenters to optimize and robustify our manufacturing process. You will interact closely with our Manufacturing, Quality, and Compute teams. Our ideal candidate brings previous experience in a bioprocess/biotechnology setting, enjoys working with precision, and brings kindness and passion to their work. 

What You'll Do (other duties may be assigned as needed):

  • Develops methods for the production, fermentation and testing of new process technologies and processes. 
  • Hands-on involvement including setup, running, and tear down of fermenters, monitoring of in-process parameters and ensuring accurate data is recording.
  • Author standard operating protocols to reflect optimized processes and parameters to ensure seamless tech transfer.
  • Collaborate with the Quality team to complete relevant documentation for tech transfer.
  • Collaborate with the Computational team to optimize small scale anaerobic growth experiments, automate data analysis and develop dashboards to help with data visualization.
  • Perform preventative maintenance of process equipment (Bioreactors, YSI glucose analyzer, liquid handler, and anaerobic chamber).

About You:

  • B.S. in a technical field (biotechnology, chemical engineering, bioengineering, microbiology, biochemistry), and 0-2 years of experience in an industrial setting.
  • Equivalent experience will be considered in lieu of the above requirement.
  • Familiarity with bench-scale fermentation units (e.g. PALL, Sartorius, DASGIP, Applikon, and New Brunswick Eppendorf).
  • Must have attention to detail and strong experience in aseptic techniques.
  • Must communicate with transparency and must be a team player.
  • Must be proficient in Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and stand for long periods at a time.
  • Must be able to work off-hours and weekends occasionally.
  • Knowledge of anaerobic microbiological techniques is a plus.
  • Knowledge of writing and validating SOPs for fermentation-related processes is a plus.
