DESIGN AT RETOOL

Retool designers are a mix of creative optimists, systems-thinkers, and tinkerers across product and brand that work together to solve some of the trickiest problems in software. Instead of designing just one product, Retool designers effectively design unique software products for thousands of companies across many different verticals.

This also presents a unique design challenge. Because it’s possible to build nearly anything in Retool, we don’t have absolute control over how our users experience the product and are constantly seeking the right balance between convention and configuration, between technical expressiveness and conceptual simplicity.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Retool is looking for a Product Designer to lead and scale our Retool Mobile product that allows developers to rapidly build native-feeling mobile applications that extend the power of building internal tools in Retool to in the field, at the warehouse, or on-site with customers.

The Mobile product launched recently to beta and this role will help continue to build, polish, and scale the Mobile product to meet more customer needs and become a ubiquitous way of creating effective, sharp, and helpful software for mobile devices.
 

IN THIS ROLE, YOU'LL

• Design and maintain Retool Mobile components that developers will use to create mobile applications in Retool.
• Iterate on the functionality inside of the Retool editor on desktop to help make the process of creating Retool Mobile applications more seamless and delightful.
• Build interactive prototypes in both Figma and the prototyping tool of your choosing to help push the interaction patterns on mobile to feel responsive, native, and intuitive.
• Work with customers to understand their needs deeply to help find solutions that solve their problems and fit within the vision of the Retool mobile product.
• Collaborate with other designers across the organization to ensure the Retool Mobile product fits into the overall vision with how Retool works and functions for developers and end-users.
• Be the de facto mobile design expert to help the design team and company best understand the benefits and constraints of mobile design.
• Partner with cross-functional partners to define project requirements and scope against business objectives, both on quarterly and sprint-based cadences.
• Work with engineering to best determine best paths forward on how to implement designs with a high quality bar.
• Be an active participant in design at Retool, providing thoughtful feedback across design and product teams in critiques, reviews, and more.

THE SKILLSET YOU’LL BRING

We’re looking for someone who has experience and feels comfortable being a de-facto mobile expert on the design team, so we’re looking for someone who has:

• Likely has at least 7~ years of experience as a professional designer. Bonus if working on a consumer mobile app during that time (If you feel confident in your abilities and have less experience, feel free still to apply)
• Strong understanding of the basics of visual design—including typography, color, layout, and composition—and how to apply those towards size-constrained screens.
• Systems-thinking mindset that allows them to scale design decisions quickly and help bring others along with them.
• Passion for building applications and interactions on mobile devices.
• Deep understanding and experience of how to build products that adhere to and build on both Google’s Material Design and Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; showcasing an ability to clearly communicate with team members, cross-functional partners, and company leadership.
• A track record of successfully collaborating with design, marketing, and engineering partners to translate user needs, business goals, marketing insights, and project constraints into informed design output.
• Ability to independently prioritize work based on project objectives and business goals, and thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment
