Job Description:
This position will manage analytical services of incoming samples from small and large scale research projects, contracts and industrial samples as part of the function of Wetland Biogeochemistry Analytical Services (WBAS) service center. The candidate will be responsible for the routine maintaince of the instruments and oversite of the quality control procedures for the following instrumentation that includes, but not limited to, a SEAL AA-500 autoanalyzer for nutrient analysis, a TOC-L Total Organic Carbon Analyzer, an Agilent 5800 ICP-OES and a Costech 4010 Elemental Combustion Analyzer. Supervise undergraduate and graduate students on analytical techniques and field logistics to perform analytical services and meet research objectives.
Job Responsibilities:
60% Oversee, operate, and maintain several analytical instruments for the analysis of environmental samples. Provide guidance to lab personnel in the preparation of analytical standards, samples and chemicals used in the analysis of nutrients in waters, soils, sediments and plant materials.
20% Perform maintenance and trouble shooting of analytical instrumentation in support of Wetland Biogeochemistry Analytical Services laboratory (WBAS). Oversee and perform innovations on use of analytical instrumentation in WBAS as required with new techniques and instrument updates associated with requirements to maintain excellence in quality analysis & quality control in service to research projects and clients requiring analytical services.
10% Oversight of program management to WBAS to serve principal investigators and research coordinators and other clients that are receiving analytical services. Supervise graduate students, and undergraduate students in managing quality control in WBAS.
5% Maintain the WBAS laboratory chemical inventory and a clean and safe work environment.
5% Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's in Chemistry, Science or related degree.
2 years experience
Degree Substitute: Bachelor's degree in related field and 4 years of related experience.
Specific experience: Experience with analytical instrumentation, methods, and maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's in Chemistry
Specific Experience:
Experience in autoanalyzers, combustion analyzers and spectrophotometers used for the quantitative analysis of soils, sediments plants and water samples. Attention to detail, organizational and interpersonal skills.Candidates with prior experience in the operation of a SEAL AA-500 autoanalyzer and an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) will be given high priority. Expertise in chemistry and/or ecology including performing sophisticated analysis on analytical instrumentation for the analysis of water, soil, sediment and plant samples are desired.
