Job Description

Trala is a tech-powered online music school. We are the fastest growing music school in the world, with over 1000% growth in 2022. Our mission is to make world-class music education accessible to every single person on Earth.Right now, music education is only accessible to the privileged, rich, and urban. Imagine instead a world where all 4 billion people who will pick up an instrument in the next 30 years could get a world-class education. That is the future we're obsessed with creating. At Trala, we're pushing forward music education in three huge ways:

  1. We invented signal processing technology that listens to students play their real instruments and gives instant feedback on every mistake.
  2. We wrote the first major method of music instruction since 1954. It's the first method geared towards adult learners and the first to prioritize accessibility and diversity.
  3. We personally match every student with a teacher to make sure there's a great fit.

Over the last 6 years, we've gotten 600,000+ downloads of our companion app, taught lessons to students in 183 countries, and earned support from great musicians like Joshua Bell. Our students are ages 5 to 90 and live in rural Montana, Lebanon, tiny Pacific islands, Hong Kong, and our hometown of Chicago. In the next 12 months, we will:

  • Grow from teaching 2000 lessons/month to 10,000 lessons/month.
  • Hire and train 100+ new teachers.
  • Incorporate bleeding-edge technology like GPT into our teaching operations.

We're headquartered in Chicago. We are open to remote applicants.

The role:

As Trala's Sales Representative, you will be the first point of contact for prospective students interested in taking private violin lessons. Your mission is to sell new students private lessons, either as an introductory trial lesson or a recurring private lesson subscription. This is achieved by becoming familiar with Trala's service model and product, establishing rapport and effectively communicating this to prospective students, and assisting prospective students in signing up for private lesson(s). On the day to day, you'll take sales calls with individuals who are eager and interested in taking lessons, share insights from calls with our team to improve our customer experience, and collaborate / train with other sales representatives.

Our current full time team members have been taking these calls and because of the success, we have decided to make this a specialized position. You get the rare opportunity to be the initial contact with our students, hear their story, and help connect them to accessible music education! As someone who is currently taking these calls (yes, me, the writer of this JD), I've enjoyed meeting passionate people around the world who are picking up the violin for the first time.

Requirements

  1. Previous sales experience or a clear interest and passion for sales.
  2. Motivated and target driven. We have clear metrics we aim to meet each month.
  3. Action-oriented. Moves with purpose, urgency, and adventure.
  4. Ambitious & hands-on. Willing and eager to learn new skills.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Comfortable with technology. We will train you on our sales software.
  7. Musical background is a plus but not required.

Benefits

  • As the Sales Development Representative, you'll grow professionally very quickly and you'll assist in bringing in new students, directly contributing to Trala's growth.
  • Trala deeply impacts peoples' lives all across the world. These are dreams you'll be fulfilling. Not "leveraged data monetization" or whatever value Facebook claims to provide these days.
  • Trala is funded by amazing people like the CEOs of LinkedIn and Duolingo. These folks are leaders in education & growth and are our mentors. They can be your mentors, too.
  • Trala prioritizes diversity, inclusion, and righting economic and social wrongs in music education. We strive to make our corner of the world a better place.
  • You'll be paid well and work with people who are the best at what they do.
  • Read up about the types of people you'll be talking with at www.trala.com/student-stories.

Pay Structure

  • Base pay + commission.

Some of the people you would work with:

  • Jeremy: VP of Growth. RevOps nerd turned growth leader. Picky eater turned Chicago foodie. Considered a rebel for preferring Excel on a Mac vs a PC.
  • Kathleen: Sales Manager. Dog mom to Penelope, pop culture enthusiast, and band groupie whose life goal is to play violin at the NPR Tiny Desk Concert of a 90s hip hop group. Extroverted introvert with unmistakable Gemini energy.
  • Jessica: Marketing Coordinator. Likes being outdoors, especially with a cup of tea (or four). Has too many plants and pins.
  • Brian: Sales Rep. Composer, Keyboardist, Conductor, and proud father. Loves to perform all styles of music and write music for documentary films. Avid movie buff and super-amateur chess player. Has an Emmy but won't bring it up. On the freaking Academy for the GRAMMYs.
  • Katherine: Sales Rep. Harpist, violinist (ish), pianist (ish), loves planning and thinking about the best way to plan. Looks forward to hearing about science from her 4th grade sons after school. Is spoiled by her husband who cooks 29 meals out of 30.
  • Jo: Sales Rep. Likes to call himself a professional whistler and foot tapper. Has thousands of vinyl, CDs, and even cassette tapes (not to date himself or anything).
  • Aaron: Sales Rep. Multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer. Maker of songs that get sold to Hallmark.
