Job Description

About Wildtype

Wildtype is on a mission to create the cleanest, most sustainable seafood on the planet, starting with sushi-grade salmon. We’re pioneering cellular agriculture to protect wild species and our oceans, and to reverse trends of global food insecurity. Wildtype will provide consumers with a new option for real seafood that provides the same nutritional benefits as the most pristine wild-caught fish, without common contaminants such as mercury, microplastics, antibiotics, or pesticides.

We were founded in 2016 by Aryé Elfenbein, a cardiologist and molecular biologist, and Justin Kolbeck (CEO), a former US diplomat who served in Pakistan and Afghanistan, in an effort to solve one of the world’s biggest problems: how to feed a growing population without stripping the earth of its natural resources and biodiversity. Investors include L Catterton, Jeff Bezos, Spark Capital, CRV, Temasek, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert Downey Jr.’s Footprint Coalition, among others.

Come join us in transforming our food system for good!

Your work at Wildtype

This role is planned for day shift Monday through Friday, and may infrequently require off-shift or weekend work due to the nature of plant startups. Following the startup of the facility and normalization of production operations, changing of the schedule may be possible (e.g. 4x10).

Your work at Wildtype:

  • Assist in all upstream production operations by operating and maintaining bioprocess equipment

  • Prepare buffers and media media at scale
  • Coordinate with warehouse/procurement to order supplies
  • Perform the routine maintenance and calibration of process equipment
  • Prepare batch production records and standard operating procedures
  • Actively identify areas for improvement and spearhead initiatives by working collaboratively with our process development and engineering teams
  • Contribute to an environment of continuous improvement and operational excellence as our R&D team works to improve organization, GMP documentation efficiency, process robustness, and production yield

What you bring to the table

  • 2+ years of experience in GMP manufacturing environment
  • High School Diploma/GED Required
  • Experience with aseptic technique and cell culture bioprocess
  • Ability to work overtime and on weekends, as necessary

  • Ability to relate with people at all levels within an organization, including diverse cultures
  • Able to perform physically demanding work such as moving and lifting equipment, standing for long periods of time, etc.
  • As a team player and Wildtype crewmate, you have a passion for jumping in and contributing to the development of a new food production process - you lean into excitement of doing something nobody’s done before

What we’ll teach you

  • How to start and develop routine operations for a pilot plant facility
  • How cellular agriculture works and why it matters
  • How to become proficient with current cell harvest methods and the implementation of next generation process technologies
  • Wildtype advocates for transparency and sharing of ideas and information. You will be working alongside the R&D, PD, Engineering, and Quality teams where you can find out what they are working on, what intrigues and motivates them, understand the challenges and successes are that have led to the current production process
  • Professional development support and a budget to achieve your career goals
  • How to work with a fast-moving, interdisciplinary team working at the leading edge of several fields

Impact Plan

  • Within 1 month You will be studying Wildtype’s production process to know it back to front and the rationale that went into the design. You will be working with draft batch records and SOPs to review the content and provide your input. You will shadow the process development team to better understand the production process.
  • Within 3 months You will no longer be shadowing our process development team, and you will have mastered the process of creating our food products. You will be relied on to produce according to a set schedule.  You will begin contributing ideas for process and product improvement.
  • Within 6 months You will have been trained to run the full scale production facility and been part of the development of the procedures for operation of the equipment. Your skills will have developed to the point where you can independently train a new hire on Wildtype’s entire product production process. Your work will be organized effectively to achieve tasks on time at a high level of quality and you will be included in discussions for implementation of process improvements.
  • Within 12 months you will be proficient at all upstream and midstream operations, and cross trained on downstream operations. You will be managing and carrying out multiple production runs simultaneously. You will routinely take the initiative to improve operations independently and volunteer new ideas or approaches. You will be able to articulate how your work directly impacts the company’s milestones.
