Position Summary

Are you passionate about the intersection between data-driven insights, impactful business strategy and solving complex challenges? New York Life's Strategic Insights team partners with business and enterprise leaders to deliver recommendations to aid in the decision-making process. We help illuminate areas of opportunities with data insights and deep partnership with leadership to drive incremental value across New York Life. This team works on a wide variety of compelling high impact projects that spans sales, wealth management, marketing, finance, and more. As a member of the Strategic Insights team, you will be a part of a group of highly skilled data, business intelligence and analytics professionals, with a passion for data and insights.

This Senior Data Engineer & Innovation will be the cornerstone of enabling data, business intelligence and analytics across the enterprise, through the development of curated datasets, sourcing new datasets, and building reliable pipelines. This person will work closely with BI developers, data engineers and data scientists on the team to provide data support for the automated reporting capabilities that will be used by the enterprise. This position will work in a dynamic fashion to deliver on long term projects as well as ad-hoc requests. The ideal candidate is an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up.

The role reports to Paul Janis https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-janis-19aa5230/, who currently heads the data driven innovation and prototyping team. Paul is a leader in the space of data engineering who has over two decades of experience bringing data driven insights and analytics into the enterprise.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategy and guidance for the architecture and development of data solutions to manage, develop and deploy a large variety of data sources, all with the purpose of forming and providing data driven insights.
• Be action oriented and comfortable working with complex data.
• Think strategically and work to define overall direction for solving complex business issues.
• Monitor and track data quality metrics
• Proactively address and resolve technical issues to support key business initiatives.
• Utilize emerging technologies to address business issues through technical innovation.
• Functions as data expert, contribute to analytics/solutions design and implementation. decisions
• Can work independently with some supervision and be part of a collaborative team
• Work with Project Managers and Scrum Masters to provide milestones and stories
• Proactively and effectively communicate in various verbal and written formats with senior level member of the team and partners
• Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and 'big data' technologies.
• Efficiently and accurately transform data to facilitate analyses and the construction of dashboards
• Experience in ingesting and automating external data in a nimble fashion
• Experience in onboarding data automation/transformation tools
• Ability to develop and automate external API calls via Python/R
• Works collaboratively with Business Intelligence and Analytics teams to enable strong insights using data
• Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
• Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
• Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into key business performance metrics.

Experience

• Passion for data and innovating with data
• 6-8+ years of overall experience working in the field of data wrangling and programming with a minimum of 2 year's experience with ingesting, cleaning, merging and applying necessary data wrangling logic in Hadoop, cloud (big query, snowflake,redshift), or other relational database systems
• Excellent command of SQL - best practices, optimization, troubleshooting and debugging
• Strong Knowledge of Enterprise Platforms, Cloud Technology and high performance computing
• Proficiency using Python for all data related work such as Numpy, Pandas, PySpark
• Advanced knowledge of API development
• Knowledge of AWS data pipeline automation
• Ability to work in a nimble, dynamic environment
• Collaborative with the ability to partner with technology counterparts
• Proactive mind set with a strong sense of ownership and delivery
• Quick learner both in terms of new technical skills and acquiring domain knowledge

• Bachelor's degree; Masters preferred
