This position is remote and can sit in the footprint of Providence in the states of AK, WA, OR, CA, TX and MT.
This role is expected to focus on automation and optimization of manual processes through Natural Language Processing (NLP) and related mathematical techniques. In general, the Sr Data Scientist role provides strong analytical expertise and leadership support for advanced strategic projects supporting the Providence system. This includes using creativity to solve data and analytical strategic and research problems.
The Sr Data Scientist will develop cloud native and on prem technology applications, conduct appropriate analyses and present data and information in an innovative format for interpretation by organizational leaders.
The Sr Data Scientist oversees and is involved in investigative design, data collection, performing statistical analysis of data, interpreting results, verifying data accuracy, and preparing final reports using computer graphics and word processing software.
The Sr Data Scientist will leverage strong engineering and architectural expertise to create production quality technical solutions. Additionally, they will act as a consultant and promoter to business leaders on advanced analytics and machine learning tools and techniques to advance this work across the Providence system.
Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive experience and expertise with Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and technology.
- Expertise in probability theory, linear algebra, calculus, and frequentist/bayesian statistics. Additional expertise in another relevant area required: eg information theory, graph theory, topology, queuing theory, operations research, optimization, time series modeling, signal processing, and/or spatial statistics.
- Extensive experience with standard machine learning frameworks (eg sklearn, SparkML, Keras, Tensorflow, pyTorch, XGBoost, MLLib). Strong theoretical understanding of the underlying algorithms and mathematics of core machine learning concepts. Deep learning expertise a plus.
- Extensive experience with data structure and algorithms, how to appropriately utilize them, and substantial experience with new algorithm development.
- Proficiency with Python, Spark, and SQL. R highly desirable. Additional languages (eg Scala, Java, C#) a plus.
- Working knowledge of basic testing techniques such as smoke and acceptance testing and debugging techniques.
- Experience designing and successfully implementing a large project.
- Experience with Agile software development methodologies and tools such as Azure Devops, TFS, and Jira required.
- Proven track record of working both independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplined team.
- Can act as the technical leader for a medium sized project.
- Working knowledge of cloud technologies, including but not limited to, Azure, AWS, and private cloud infrastructures. Azure preferred.
- Experience with source code control systems such as Git and how to successfully use them within a single team.
- Experience with MLOps processes and technology is preferred.
- SQL development experience with SQL/noSQL required.
- Working knowledge of how to create basic artifacts in structured (SQL) and/or unstructured (noSQL) solutions.
- Can work independently on multiple large projects.
- Ability to simultaneously handle multiple priorities.
- Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
- Working knowledge of desktop software applications (e.g. MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, Internet, Email).
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in:
- Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics/Physics, Engineering, Or related STEM fields, Or equivalent educ/experience
- Master's Degree in:
- Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics/Physics, Engineering, Or related STEM fields. Or equivalent educ/experience
- 5-8 or more years related experience with increasing scope and responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 year of Experience in a healthcare environment
- Proficiency with Python, Spark, and SQL. R highly desirable. Additional languages (eg Scala, Java, C#) a plus

The salary range listed for this position MIN:$52.84 to MAX: $89.98 per hour rated exempt is based upon the primary work location posted in Portland, OR. This position is remote. Salary range and offers are determined by internal pay equity and geographic cost of living differences. Salary rage will vary from State and Region. Salary max is limited to 90% range in order to continue to offer internal pay growth. We welcome open and transparent discussions on salary at Providence.

The amounts listed are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
