We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Engineering to lead our engineering team and drive innovation across client and internal projects. This role is integral to our organization's success, requiring a visionary leader who can align engineering initiatives with business objectives, mentor a diverse and talented team, and deliver high-quality solutions that exceed client expectations. Location:Â Rockville, MD. Hybrid role with 2-3 days in office.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and oversee the strategic and operational aspects of the engineering department.
- Advocate for and implement efficient and innovative engineering solutions for clients.
- Manage the engineering team, providing guidance, training, and mentorship.
- Foster a collaborative and inspiring environment within the team.
- Coordinate with other department leaders to align engineering projects with business goals.
- Ensure all engineering projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the client's specifications.
- Define key performance indicators for team productivity, project/product delivery and quality.
- Establish and maintain some mechanism for feedback.
- Ensuring that feedback is addressed in a timely manner.
- Apply quality assurance processes to deliver high-quality engineering services.
- Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies, utilizing this knowledge to improve services.
- Drive continuous improvement efforts while ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
- Keep overall team utilization and billability to target specified.
- Come up with and implement an action plan if numbers aren't to target.
- Ensure the team is trained to handle the needs of the market.
- Ensure the team is cross-trained so they are more likely to be kept utilized.
- Review and Identify project risks for client projects and internal initiatives.
- Mentor and grow managers from within the team.
- Hire new managers, QAs, developers and other staff where needed.Â
- Interview new team members where needed.
- Capable of stepping into projects as needed to resolve blockers.
- Prevent the formation of knowledge silos.
- Improve/Maintain interdepartmental collaboration.
- Work with the R&D team on internal initiatives and manage the delivery of those initiatives.
- Determine and ensure that the needs of the engineering team in general are met.
- Be a sounding board for team members where necessary for technical and non-technical issues.
- Ensure teams are not being overallocated and attempt to mitigate burnout.
- Assess upcoming projects and impact on the current team.
- Assess team composition vs the needs of the organization.
- Resolve shortcomings within the team.
- Balance resources between internal initiatives with external client work.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Proven experience in an engineering leadership role, preferably within a consulting environment.
- Strong project management skills.
- Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills with the ability to inspire teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A commitment to excellence and continued professional development.
- 2+ years of development experience at some point during the career.
- Familiarity with bash scripting, java, Jenkins, and DevOps.
