The Analytics Platform team at Atlassian is dedicated to empowering all teams, both within Atlassian and those using our products, to make informed decisions using timely, trustworthy, and valuable data. Our mission is to provide a unified, scalable, and high-performance analytics platform that enables data-informed decision-making.

The team is responsible for building the "One Analytics Platform", which captures data from various sources and organizes it into data lakehouses that are easily discoverable and governed. This platform supports a wide range of analytical needs, from running the business and research & development to customer analytics and machine learning.

Your role

As a Senior Principal Software Engineer in the Analytics Platform team, you will help envision, build and evolve cutting-edge platform capabilities for ingressing, transforming, storing and consuming massive volumes of analytical data. You will utilise your extensive expertise in big data technologies and systems to address some of our most intricate challenges by leveraging prominent cloud and data platform solutions, in conjunction with the latest data lakehouse open-source technologies.

As a senior technical leader, you will be expected to lead other engineers to define our strategic technical direction, and to execute projects from design to launch. You will widely collaborate with other teams and leaders globally to influence, set expectations, gather inputs and communicate results. Your role is pivotal in identifying and driving step-change initiatives, ensuring Data and AI's transformative potential is realized across our offerings for all our customers and internal partners.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with partner teams and internal customers to help define technical direction and OKRs for the Analytics Platform team.
• Own key OKRs and end-to-end outcomes of critical projects in a data and microservices environment.
• Champion best practices and innovative techniques for scalability, reliability, and performance optimizations.
• Own engineering and operational excellence for the health of our systems and processes. Proactively drive opportunities for continuous improvements and own key operational metrics.
• Continually drive developer productivity initiatives to ensure that we unleash the potential of our own team.
• Help hire and mentor engineers to build an open, innovative and operationally responsible culture.

On your first day, we'll expect you to have

• Strong technical expertise and 12+ years experience in designing/building enterprise grade solutions using microservices. Fluency in at least one modern object-oriented programming language.
• Deep knowledge and experience building large-scale, highly available distributed systems leveraging batch and streaming big data technologies (e.g. Spark, Presto, Flink, Delta Lake, Parquet).
• Experience building and operating large scale distributed systems using cloud technologies from AWS/Azure/GCP.
• Focus on business outcomes and the 80/20 rule; very high bar for output quality, but recognize the business benefit of 'ship small, ship fast and iterate' vs 'building for perfection'.
• Passion for engineering rigor and operational excellence (design principles and patterns, unit testing, best practices for security and privacy, CI/CD etc). You will be a role model for operational responsibility and data-driven engineering rigor.
• Excellent collaboration, communication and leadership skills. Ability to get engineers to follow their lead as well as mentor/coach.
• High level of energy and a desire to innovate in a large, fast-paced organization; with an ability to balance multiple projects under pressure.
