Job Description:
Position description and primary responsibilities:
This position uses social media platforms to make connections between the DTN newsroom and the agriculture industry, ranging from farmers and ranchers to large agribusinesses. This individual also will drive engagement with the next generation of U.S. farmers and ranchers by creating content that speaks specifically to that important subset of our audience and by ensuring that young farmer voices are represented throughout DTN's coverage.
Reports to: DTN Digital Manager
Job duties: This position has dual responsibilities. Approximately 50% of time will be devoted to promoting DTN's award-winning content through social platforms. This helps drive awareness of and engagement with DTN's content, experts and industry-leading intelligence products. This individual also will mine social media for story ideas and use social to make connections with potential sources. The social media editor will routinely train and coach staff on best practices for social platforms. The other 50% of time will be devoted to doing original reporting on issues facing the nation's next generation of farmers and ranchers as they seek to establish and expand operations. These early- to mid-career farmers are of utmost interest to the agriculture industry at large. This individual will be expected to report on and write news articles as well as create video and audio segments. Topics covered in this person's content could include business strategies, farm financing, machinery and technology adoption, livestock and crop production. Our social media editor will report to DTN's Digital Manager but also will work closely with the newsroom's Editor-in-Chief, the Content Manager as well as various subject matter experts.
Critical knowledge areas:
- Demonstrated skills in journalistic reporting, writing and editing.
- Skills in all forms of storytelling, including written content, photography, video and audio.
- Strong news judgment in prioritizing critical farm business and feature content.
- Ability to set and meet deadlines, and a clear understanding of the urgency in digital media.
- Strong understanding and interest in using social media as both a way to increase audience engagement with content and as way to spot trends and important issues our newsroom should address.
- Understanding and/or interest in the unique business and family lifestyle circumstances that modern farms must balance as well as an interest in the issues faced as family farms transition from one generation to another.
- Ability to make farmers comfortable discussing some of their most closely guarded business and business management information.
- Ability to both lead a team of peers on a subject as well as be a member of a team lead by a peer.
- Strong editing and rewriting skills, and a strong desire to develop those skills over time.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimal requirements:
- Unwavering ethics
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or equivalent
- 3-5 years experience as reporter or editor
- Working knowledge of content management systems, social media platforms, video and photography as well as basic Office programs
- Capacity to work on multiple projects at once
- Willingness to travel
