Crafting the Perfect LinkedIn Connection Request
When reaching out to connect with someone on LinkedIn, it's essential to make a great first impression. Think of it as a first date – you want to woo them and leave them wanting more. Unfortunately, many job seekers struggle to craft a compelling connection request.
I often receive requests from job seekers asking me to introduce them to people in my network. To make it easier for both parties, I ask the job seeker to draft a message explaining why they want to connect. However, some individuals don't quite get it right.
Take, for instance, the following example:
"Hi Sam, I'm an outgoing and personable professional with a degree in accounting. I've worked as a staff accountant and assistant project manager, but I'm looking for new opportunities. I'm interested in The Best Company in Your Town, but I didn't see any job openings that fit my qualifications. Can I have your email or phone number so I can send you my resume?"
What's wrong with this approach?
- The formatting is overwhelming, making it difficult to read.
- It takes too long to get to the point, which may deter the recipient from reading further.
- The job seeker's goals are too vague, requiring the recipient to do too much thinking.
- Asking for an email or phone number is too pushy, especially when they can already connect on LinkedIn.
- The request puts the burden of action on the recipient, rather than taking ownership and initiative.
So, how can you craft a better connection request? Here's an example:
"Hi Sam, I came across your profile and was impressed by your work promoting The Best Company's reputation in Your Town. As a staff accountant and assistant project manager, I've developed skills that could benefit your organization. I'd love to learn more about your goals and challenges and explore potential opportunities. Perhaps we could connect and discuss further at the Digital Town event in May?"
This revised message is concise, clear, and shows genuine interest in the recipient's work. By taking the time to craft a thoughtful connection request, you're more likely to build meaningful relationships on LinkedIn.
