ABOUT THE POSITION

Two Rochester neighborhoods summer interns will collaborate with each other and with Democrat and Chronicle journalists to develop quick-turn news stories serving audiences in city neighborhoods and to develop reporting about codes enforcement issues in the city and neighboring towns. Coverage might range from writing about or posting Instagram Reels from a festival to stories and social media posts examining areas of Rochester where codes enforcement might be lax.

Rochester is a city of vibrant neighborhoods. It is also a place where past decisions in real estate, transportation and business have led to disparities in income and public safety and housing quality. The interns will conduct interviews and photograph and shoot video of local persons and events to shed light both on community pride and on community needs. Many stories will focus on small business owners, neighborhood organizations, places of worship and young people. Interns might participate in online discussions of their reporting and research.

Work will mix public records searches and reviews with "curbside reporting." The interns will work at least 10 hours per week as part of a group of journalists focused on the state of local codes enforcement and how that affects people's health and safety and quality of life. They'll review public records and court documents, attend public meetings and neighborhood group get-togethers and create a steady drumbeat of shorter, focused codes-enforcement stories that would include a good deal of service journalism (how-to stories on making codes complaints, for example). Work output might include news stories, Reels and TikTok video and collaboration on maps and graphics helping visualize city data on codes enforcement. The interns will each have a supervising editor and peer mentors.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

  • Strong writing skills and a command of grammar and style.
  • Experience with social media, including Instagram Reels, as a tool to build audience and as a source for beat development.
  • Experience with and interest in multimedia, including video and podcasting.
  • A self-starter who owns the beat yet works collaboratively with others locally and regionally to meet common goals.
  • A journalist committed to values of fairness, diversity, inclusion and professionalism.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Working toward a bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience as a reporter/writer and/or photographer/videographer.
  • Proven experience with content management systems and social media channels.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
