To qualify at the GS-05 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience:
To qualify for the GS-05 Rangeland Management Specialist, you must meet the basic requirements.

To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:

Specialized Experience:
Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level comparable in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Rangeland Management Specialist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: planning and/or conducting range studies on several assigned allotments; assisting higher level professionals with grazing applications and permits; assisting in the management of an invasive weed program including inventorying, monitoring or treatments; monitoring and/or surveying activities; and utilizing automated equipment and systems.

OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.

OR Superior Academic Achievement: (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary but may occasionally require some physical exertion such as walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and exposure to extreme temperatures. The field duties of this position require that the employee operate four-wheel drive vehicles on and off roads in isolated areas.

Work Environment: Work is performed in the office and field locations under a variety of topographic and climatic conditions.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a:

  1. Degree: Range Management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows:

    • Range Management -- At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning.

    • Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Sciences -- At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable.

    • Related Resource Management Studies -- At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife management, watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management.

  2. Combination of education and experience: at least 42 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
