Summary There are two (2) TERM GS-09 Archivist positions: One Term Archivist position is at Zion National Park and one is at Yellowstone National Park. These positions will have an initial appointment expecting to last 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service. DIRECT DEPOSIT: Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. DRIVER'S LICENSE: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license may be required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. WORK SCHEDULE: Will depend on location. You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, & overtime. TRIAL PERIOD: You will be required to complete a one-year trial period. TRAVEL: Will depend on location. Zion may require local travel 2-5 days per month to neighboring parks. A government vehicle is available for these day trips. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. TELEWORK: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position may be suitable for telework, but will depend on location. The selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Qualifications Open to the first 100 applicants or until 12/19/2024 whichever comes first. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate (1) the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, (2) starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and (3) the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. In order to qualify for this GS-1420-09 Archivist position you must meet the qualifications below: BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. You must include a copy of your official or unofficial transcripts with your application. If you do not include a copy of your transcripts, you will be found ineligible. -OR- Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education as described below. You must include a copy of your official or unofficial transcripts with your application. If you do not include a copy of your transcripts, you will be found ineligible. -AND- SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). You must include hours per week worked (full time is 40 hours per week) and dates in to/from and month/year format in order to accurately calculate your length of specialized experience. Evaluation of Specialized Experience: Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law. This specialized experience includes activities such as: Conducted hands-on work in archives under the guidance of a credentialed archivist to organize; Arranged and described a major body of analog (paper) records; Cataloged archival collections; Appraised records for retention based on a records schedule; Prepared finding aids for an archival collection; and/or Assessed the condition of records and rehouse them to ensure their preservation. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or a master's or equivalent in archival science, history, or a closely related degree field. You must include a copy of your official or unofficial transcripts with your application. If you do not include a copy of your transcripts, you will be found ineligible. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, six months of specialized experience and two and a half years of graduate level education leading to a master's degree. (note: only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level can be combined with the appropriate level of experience to qualify). You must include a copy of your official or unofficial transcripts with your application. If you do not include a copy of your transcripts, you will be found ineligible. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Additional information Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temperatures ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in the summer, and 10 to 55 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah, located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, (63 miles), Utah. Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale, with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George, and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. **Due to the desirable nature of the area surrounding Zion National Park, please be sure to research and understand the limited housing options and the area's cost-of-living.** The position at Yellowstone National Park located within the park boundary in Gardiner, MT., five miles north of Park Headquarters/Mammoth Hot Springs, WY where basic amenities are available (small grocery store, K-12 school, restaurants, motels, etc.). Full-service amenities are available 60 miles north in Livingston, MT and 90 miles northwest in Bozeman, MT. A small medical clinic is located at Mammoth Hot Springs. Temperatures in this area of the park vary from 70-90+ degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to sub-zero in the winter. The North Entrance to the Northeast Entrance is the only road open to wheeled vehicles all year. Year-round visitation is steadily trending toward significant increases in autumn, winter, and spring. Mammoth Hot Springs is the only year-round, NPS visitor services operation in the park. For Zion Only - Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation. Employer paid and reimbursed relocation expenses are considered taxable income. The NPS does not provide tax, legal or accounting advice.
