AltaGas - Process Engineer


Reporting to the Unified Operations Centre Manager, the Process Engineer in this position will focus on Operations Support. This role emphasizes collaboration, efficiency, and optimization of plant processes. You will work closely with other technical professionals to solve operational challenges and enhance the function of the Midstream Unified Operations Centre (UOC). Additionally, you will lead continuous improvement processes and projects that expand the process/process control function
 

You will:

  • Learn existing (and future) assets process and process control. Collaborate with the Lead Operations team to understand the challenges and nuances of specific processes.
  • Assist Operations with process control, tuning, and optimization.
  • Work closely with Lead Operators & Operations Engineers to develop process test plans to safely scope, test, and evaluate process optimization opportunities, then formalize them into routine operations upon successful outcomes.
  • Utilize digital tools like PI System and PI Vision to monitor processes and provide optimization/debottlenecking directions.
  • Become a proficient dynamic model user, using dynamic modeling software to perform offline process simulations and identify process control improvement opportunities like loop tuning, debottlenecking, and advanced process control.
  • Develop process control standards.
  • Lead improvement opportunities in advanced process control and automation. Perform internal evaluations and generate preliminary scopes for potential process control projects.
  • Conduct site visits to aid in relationship development, scoping, and implementation.
  • Evaluate the commercial benefit of various initiatives.
  • Assist in the development of bid packages and EPC selection.
  • Manage assigned third-party resources.
  • Liaise with AltaGas OT, Digital Team, and external resources.
  • Provide subject matter expertise across AltaGas operations and projects.
  • Offer real-time process oversight of multiple facilities in support of Operations, responding to analysis or troubleshooting concerns as they arise.
  • Support risk resolution, process safety, maintenance, and reliability groups with process/process control recommendations.
  • Develop and manage improvement opportunities through the MOC process.
  • Perform process engineering design and authenticate documents for small or urgent revisions when required.
  • Provide PHA / HAZOP / QRA support.
  • Collaborate with commercial, project development, and project execution personnel as needed.
  • Mentor Junior Engineers, where opportunities arise.

You have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Process / Chemical Engineering required (P.Eng preferred)
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in the oil and gas industry, ideally gas/LPG processing
  • Experience in process equipment design and process controls
  • Competency with process simulators, Hysys and/or Promax Simulation preferred
  • Self-motivation and efficiency in time management and organizational skills
  • Self-sufficiency and ability to work independently and/or with minimal supervision
  • Ability to multi-task in a varied and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including process, mechanical, civil-structural, electrical, piping, and rotating equipment experts
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to travel (5-10%) to attend site visits
  • Experience with advanced process controls
  • Experience with dynamic process simulation
  • Experience in process equipment rating and debottlenecking studies
  • PHA Pro familiarity
  • PHA / HAZOP / QRA facilitation
