General Description:

Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension is seeking an Assistant or Associate Professor in Wildlife and Rangeland Ecology and Management. The successful candidate will develop an integrated Research/Extension program that will integrate rangeland stewardship and grazing management with wildlife management (game and non-game), particularly in energy-dominated landscapes of semi-arid and arid regions in Texas. This research program will also address associated emerging issues related to renewable energy development, carbon sequestration, grazing interactions, and wildlife habitat management. The position is a 12-month appointment, non-tenure track, with a 75% appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Research and a 25% appointment with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The position will be located at the San Angelo Research and Extension Center, and has a departmental appointment with the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX.

Position Responsibilities:

• Develop and deliver an independent research program on assessing and enhancing health of rangeland systems, with an emphasis on wildlife habitat management in energy-dominated landscapes to include emerging challenges and opportunities such as renewable energy sites and carbon sequestration.
• Develop an Extension program that supports county agents and delivers best practices to stakeholders that addresses key elements of wildlife management on rangelands, with an emphasis on energy development sites.
• Mentor graduate students in research.
• Recruit and supervise research and/or extension staff as necessary to achieve deliverables in sponsored projects.
• Coordinate and collaborate with internal and external partners to conduct research on managing and/or restoring rangeland systems to benefit wildlife conservation within renewable energy production areas in relation to industry needs and state and federal policy.
• Seek extramural funding (i.e. federal, state, private) to fund research and outreach efforts.
• Participate as a team member in rangeland wildlife research and technology transfer/outreach with other faculty affiliated cooperating agencies and institutions in the Texas, including Texas A&M University Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and Texas A&M University Department of Animal Science. 
• Contribute to statewide programs in development of integrated wildlife management practices best suited to energy dominated rangelands.
• Serve a critical need for the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management in its effort to achieve the mission of preparing the next generation of natural resource stewards through teaching, research, engagement, and policy.
• Other duties as assigned.

Administrative Relationships:

• Reports directly to the Center Director, Texas A&M AgriLife Research-San Angelo, with guidance from the Department Head and Associate Department Head for Extension, within the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management at Texas A&M University, College Station. 
• Directs the work of support staff, and other technical personnel and graduate students assigned to the project.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology/Management, Rangeland Ecology/Management, Natural Resources, or related field.
• Experience in area of specialization, including to include rangeland systems.
• Evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
• Participation in professional societies.

Preferred Experience: 

• Experience managing an independent research program.
• Experience sourcing external funding.
• Experience in leading research in rangeland management.
• Experience interacting with private landowners and managers, industry, and stakeholder groups.
• Demonstrated capability to perform independent research, supervise scientific support staff and graduate students, and publish results in refereed journals.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
• Ability to write grant proposals to secure external funding.
• Competence in the use of personal computers and appropriate statistical-analysis software.
• Strong interpersonal skills to cooperate as an interdisciplinary team member are required.
• Ability to acquire a Texas driver’s license.

Location:

Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center is located on HWY 87 in San Angelo, Texas.

Facilities:

The center manages more than 15,000 acres of rangeland and several thousand head of livestock. This includes property near San Angelo, Menard, Sonora, and Ozona.
