Job Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
The Web Onboarding team helps sellers start, run, and grow their business with Square. We build products and platforms that support sellers at every step in their Square journey, from discovery to onboarding to activation and engagement. As the Engineering Manager on the Web Onboarding team, you will partner with a group of engineers, designers, data scientists, and go-to-market partners to build remarkable solutions that have outsized impact in helping sellers get started with Square and realize value from Square's ecosystem. You'll work cross-platform with Mobile and Backend engineering teams to design, build and ship features across our Point of Sale clients on iOS and Android, our seller facing tools on the web, and our backend platforms. You'll work with Product and Design to build features that present elegant UI for complex problems, saving Sellers time and reducing anxiety as they strive to succeed.
You Will

  • Oversee the web experience of Square sellers, including system performance and resilience
  • Cultivate an excellence-driven organization by hiring remarkable talent, coaching your team, promoting principled and collaborative engineering decision-making, and applying your technical expertise to maintain a high bar
  • Lead your team in creating beautiful, unique products which allow Square sellers to manage complex business operations while also expanding our product internationally into new markets
  • Participate in essential technical, design, and product discussions with leaders across our product, engineering, data, and design teams
  • Anticipate non-obvious risks and resolve complex issues

You Have

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent practical experience) plus 8+ years of relevant industry (or additional academic) experience
  • 2+ years of demonstrated success managing an engineering team
  • Expertise building for the Web (inclusive of managing teams that build for the Web)
  • High ownership, passion for delivering business results, and bias for action
  • Experience collaborating with engineering leaders and cross-functional team members
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering product features spanning multiple teams from start to finish with strong collaboration, communication, and ownership

Technologies We Use and Teach

  • JavaScript, TypeScript, and working in modern web frameworks (specifically React)
  • Backend technologies (NodeJS, Java), front-end build tools (Webpack, ESbuild, Vite), and micro front-end architecture
