The Role: Founding Backend Software Engineer

We are currently searching for our first backend engineer who can own the business logic and database layers of our runtime, as well as flex up to the React side when needed. You will be joining a team that is pushing the boundaries of leveraging LLMs, requiring you to create novel ways for our LLM team to interface with APIs you create.

As a founding engineer and early employee you will help take us to a public launch where an amazing user experience brings joy and sparks user growth. You will be on a small team of high caliber software engineers, ML engineers, and data scientists solving big problems collaboratively while planning, building features and shipping code. This role is the bridge connecting people and infrastructure together through a Python based codebase serving as the common denominator. As an early hire your technical decisions will be paramount as you will need to balance moving quickly with the reality your architecture will need to be extended by future team members.

About You

• You are excited to be part of the LLM transformative wave to help forge tooling, observability, and eventually discovering best practices around LLM development 

• You highly value constantly tinkering with code making it more readable, maintainable and performant, but you are also able to make tradeoffs to create momentum and capture opportunity 

• You craft thoughtful SDKs and APIs that serve as building blocks other developers intuitively understand

• You know how and when to scale your code, understanding the tradeoffs of concurrent, parallel, and distributed runtimes 

• You love to ship code to production daily in a safe and responsible way by leveraging a combination of unit and integration tests 

• You love to solve hard problems by coding an elegant simple solution 

• You enjoy working with product to propose alternative solutions by clearly articulating tradeoffs 

• Your work product tends to inspire people to write better, cleaner code

• You come to the table with strong opinions, yet are loosely held.

Requirements

• Extensive experience building and running application servers supporting high throughput

• Can architect an API supporting multiple clients including web, mobile and LLMs, each potentially working on different version contracts

• Ability to create software abstractions to handle cross cutting concerns such as logging, observability, and robustness 

• Can stand up cloud infrastructure, particularly comfortable building and deploying containers 

• Solid experience with ORMs, SQL and measuring / optimizing performance issues in queries 

Bonus Criteria

• Proven track record shipping software in highly dynamic early stage startup environment

• Familiarity with Python and its ecosystem, particularly comfortable with concurrent / future based programming via FastAPI 

• You have built stream and batch based ETL pipelines 

• Experience with multi variant testing and rolling out new code behind feature flags 

• You have operations and configuration management experience to create fully managed immutable infrastructure

• Have strong skills in proposing new schema changes through ER diagrams

• Stood up CI/CD pipelines enabling dev teams to move fast with confidence 

• You have some hands on experience tinkering with LLM tool chains such as GPT, Langchain, HuggingFace, etc

Compensation Range: $180K - $250K
