Job Description
Polecat analyses the media impact of big organisations to show them how different topics affect their reputation. This is a fast-growing market as more and more organisations start to take Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) concerns seriously.
We want to grow the frontend team working on our SaaS products. We ingest tens of millions of documents (articles or social posts) per day into our stream processing pipeline, using our scoring algorithms and models to transform natural language into measurable company and topic mentions such that our web-applications can provide engaging and interactive data visualisations and reporting / sharing tools. We aspire to make reputation, ESG and risk perception data a part of strategic decision making in all organisations.
Our frontend code is primarily TypeScript, with React being used as our rendering library. However, we are also open to candidates without Typescript experience if you have an interest in learning it and have had JavaScript experience and similarly with React, experience with similar rendering libraries would be considered relevant.
Our frontend tech stack also includes:
- Apollo Client (GraphQL)
- Next JS
- Auth0
And exposure to any of these would be beneficial but not essential to get started in the role.
We have a culture of listening to engineers and taking time to produce great quality code. We don't want to be just a feature factory that racks up the technical debt; we believe that quality engineering is the foundation of a successful product. We also believe strongly in Building the Right Thing, and our engineers actively participate in the decision-making & design process.
Polecat is a fully remote company and accepting applications from anywhere within the UK and Poland. We do regular lunches and other social events in the Bristol area.
Requirements
Specific skills and experience required:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience of building software, in a team, that is being used by real customers.
- Degree-level capability in a maths/science/computing subject or equivalent experience.
- Experience with React or similar rendering library languages
- Knowledge of JavaScript or TypeScript
- Interest in software best practices and enthusiasm for them.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
Our ideal candidate would be someone with a history of close collaboration with product designers, DevOps specialists, backend & full stack engineers, and QA, with the ability to do cross-team tasks as required. For example, someone who is capable of contributing to high level design ideas or can apply design principles when a low-level design isn’t available or could perhaps pick up a small backend change to unblock themselves.
Â
In a typical week, you might:
- Pick up a feature story and implement it in the UI.
- Jump on a call with the rest of the team to scope out new ideas.
- Investigate a new technology or approach we could adopt.
- Deploy your changes into cloud dev and stage environments, and work with QA to test them.
- Identify a pain point and propose or implement improvements.
- Review merge requests from other team members.
Â
You’re going to love this job if you:
- Have a do-it-yourself mentality
- Love consistency in approach and design
- Thrive on problem solving in a fast-paced commercial environment.
- Like the flexibility and freedom of a start-up business culture.
- Enjoy learning new technologies and expanding your comfort zone.
Benefits
- Fully remote working from within the UK or Poland. Occasional meetups in Bristol, UK.
- Flexible working arrangements possible
- Annual holidays (25 days – increases with tenure).
- Bank holidays (in addition to annual holiday noted above).
- Enhanced sick time.
- Pension plan scheme with employer match.
- Great team environment – we’re here to help provide everything you need to be successful!
