Qualifications:
To qualify for this position you must meet the (1) Basic Educational Requirements AND (2) Specialized Experience for the series/grade to which you are applying.


(1) Basic Educational Requirements:
In addition to the specialized experience requirements for this position, applicants must meet the Education Requirements and/or experience described below for the series you wish to be considered for:

History Series 0170
A. Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

General Anthropology Series 0190
A. Degree: appropriate field of anthropology
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology, or related course work, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
OR
C. Experience: four years of appropriate experience in anthropology performing research, museum work, or similar professional-level work.

Archeology Series 0193
A. Education
1. Degree: that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:
  • History of archeology.
  • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.
  • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development.
  • Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.
  • Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.
-AND-
  • Six semester hours of related course work in:
  • geography, geology, or cultural geography;
  • history, historiography, or historical archeology;
  • environmental studies;
  • scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
  • surveying;
-AND-
  • Archeological field school.
2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).
OR
B. Combination of education and experience-- College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
OR
C. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

Landscape Architecture Series 0807
A. Degree: landscape architecture or landscape design.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience. For each year short of graduation, the applicant must have had 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance of such character and diversity as to be a satisfactory substitute for the required education. This experience must have included original landscape design.

(2) Specialized Experience
GS-9
To qualify for the GS-09, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1) Providing input into the development of technical or scientific analyses related to tribal resources or historic properties;
2) Writing on technical matters in clear, non-technical language;
3) Conducting analyses or preparing documentation for historic properties, cultural, or tribal resources under the National Environmental Policy Act or National Historic Preservation Act.
Must meet 2 of 3.

B. Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
-OR-
C. Combination of Education and Experience: A qualifying combination of post baccalaureate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

GS-11
To qualify for the GS-11, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1) Providing input into the development of technical or scientific analyses related to tribal resources or historic properties;
2) Writing on technical matters in clear, non-technical language; AND
3) Conducting analyses or preparing documentation for historic properties, cultural, or tribal resources under the National Environmental Policy Act or National Historic Preservation Act.
Must meet all.

B. Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
-OR-
C. Combination of Education and Experience: A qualifying combination of education in excess of the first two years of progressively higher-level graduate education earned toward a Ph.D. or the equivalent doctorate and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

GS-12
To qualify for the GS-12, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1) Leading the development of technical or scientific analyses related to tribal resources or historic properties;
2) Writing on complex and technical matters in clear, non-technical language suitable to the public;
3) Conducting analyses or preparing documentation for historic properties, cultural, or tribal resources under the National Environmental Policy Act or National Historic Preservation Act; AND
4) Designing or implementing research related to tribal resources or historic properties.

GS-13

To qualify for the GS-13, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
1) Overseeing the development of technical or scientific analyses for National Environmental Policy Act or National Historic Preservation Act related to historic properties, cultural, or tribal resources;
2) Writing and presenting on complex and technical matters in clear, non-technical language suitable to a wide variety of audiences and in different forums and formats;
3) Conducting analyses or preparing documentation for historic properties, cultural, or tribal resources under the National Environmental Policy Act or National Historic Preservation Act;
4) Designing, implementing, and overseeing research related to tribal resources or historic properties; AND
5) Facilitating or directing a multidisciplinary team related to tribal resources or historic properties.
Must meet all.
