We are looking for a new colleague to join our Gear Manufacturing Department at our plant in Marysville, MI!

Position Summary:
Oversees metallurgical activities as they pertain to raw material, forging, grinder burn and heat treatment operations for all metal components heat-treated at Marysville. Applies metallurgical techniques to develop and maintain bevel gear manufacturing processes such as isolation paste, carburizing, quenching, tempering and nital etch to meet operational and quality targets.

Position Responsibilities:

• Serve as the primary liaison for metallurgical part related quality, process and product between suppliers, other departments, divisions, business units and customers as required.
• Develops, analyzes, and plans process optimization for carburizing, quenching, and all related operations like isolation, pre and post HT washer operations for all components heat-treated at Marysville.
• Responsible for determining heat treatment process parameters and ensuring that the heat treatment process produces parts conforming to quality specifications.
• Develops quality system documentation for heat treatment processes, including work instructions, process routings, process flow charts, recipes, process control plans, and process FMEAs
• Interfaces with product development, suppliers, customers, and manufacturing staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.
• Creates specifications for needed heat treatment equipment, materials, or parts. Selects equipment suppliers and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.
• Performs problem solving activities, using A3 and Six-Sigma methods where appropriate, in order to resolve problems related to quality requirements, service requirements, manufacturing procedures and cost.
• Provides cost studies for future products incoming, including calculation of cycle times. Develops a strategy for implementation of the new products.
• Participates in continuous improvement activities including minimizing cycle time, quality improvements, and technology developments.
• Project team member for evaluating all changes to existing incoming raw material as well as any new products to ensure they do not negatively impact the machinability, distortion, and hardenability.
• Follows group directives and standards including gate release process and ISO 9001 / IATF
• Evaluates engineering changes impacting the heat treatment of components heat treated at Marysville, including performing APQP and PPAP activities as warranted.
• Primary support Marysville Axle facility, however, this position may travel to other ZF facilities and supplier facilities to provide heat treatment guidance.
• Performs related tasks as needed.

Essential Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in either Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science or equivalent experience. Master's Degree strongly preferred.
• Minimum 6 - 8+ years of advanced engineering experience. Experience with bevel, cylindrical gears or heat treatment preferred.
• Working knowledge of carburizing and quenching processes, metallurgical inspection methods, and IATF compliant quality systems.
• Experience with manufacturing engineering activities for carburizing and quenching processes. Training courses may include time and project management, communication, computer courses focusing on Excel, Power Point, SAP, CAD, and business management. Six Sigma Green- or Black-Belt Certification preferred. IATF and ISO 14001 awareness training.
• Other Requirements: Domestic and international travel required.
