Your Opportunity

Stantec's Mining Practice is hiring a Mining Project Engineer in Training to join their growing team in Salt Lake City, Utah or one of our other mining focused offices. This teammate will be a shared resource between the surface mine engineering and mine site assessment and remediation disciplines. Job duties in this role will include:

Technical contributor to mining engineering and related projects for mining studies and projects of varying size and complexity, and at various project stages from initial concepts through to execution. This person may be required to work on several projects at a time. Our projects are focused on many different commodities including aggregates, industrial minerals, and metals.

Field contributor for the construction quality assurance (CQA) team at a mine reclamation project in northern New Mexico. This aspect of the position will be a rotational field assignment where you will be expected to provide field engineering, quality assurance, and general construction observation as part of a skilled and qualified team. This requires a willingness and ability to travel to northern New Mexico approximately two weeks per month to perform work on an active construction site at an elevation of 10,000 feet above sea level.

Your Key Responsibilities

Engineering - Surface Mine Engineering Discipline
  • Work with geologists, geotechnical engineers, and civil engineers to help design mine access, determine mining methods, mine development, and mine infrastructure.
  • Prepare mine development and production plans and schedules.
  • Estimate performance productivities and support the preparation of capital and operating costs.
  • Attend meetings and interface with clients, external consultants, contractors, sub-contractors, and/or vendors.
  • Participate in technical reviews.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.
  • Support the development of standards and specifications for the mining group.
  • Prepare technical reports.
  • National and international travel can be expected with the possibility of extended stays.

Projects - Mine Site Assessment and Remediation Discipline
  • Following safe work practices and adhering to company and client guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner. OSHA HAZWOPER training as well as site-specific safety training will be required.
  • Interacting daily with client management, engineering, and field staff to plan and execute reclamation activities.
  • Conducting Stantec CQA activities including field observations, sample collection, field testing (as required), and daily reports.
  • Developing and implementing design solutions, as-built construction verification, and other field engineering activities utilizing AutoCAD Civil3D software.
  • Preparing technical memoranda and detailed as-built reports pertaining to the project reclamation construction activities.
  • Preparing and presenting at various project meetings.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Engineering - Surface Mine Engineering Discipline
  • Strong knowledge, interpretation, and application of the mining standards and best practices.
  • Thorough understanding of mining engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others.
  • Proven problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time.
  • Be a driver of a positive work environment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use or learn industry standard computer applications.
  • MSHA 40-hour New Miner training certificate is preferred or the ability to obtain after employment.

Projects - Mine Site Assessment and Remediation Discipline
  • Ability and willingness to travel roughly 50% through United States and Canada and work up to 12-hour shifts while onsite for approximately 2 weeks per month.
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the field at remote sites.
  • Disciplined with time management to meet project budget and schedule.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training certificate is preferred or the ability to obtain after employment.
  • Must have a good driving record and valid Driver's License.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Mining, Civil, or Geotechnical Engineering Degree from an accredited university.
  • Current E.I.T. or willingness to obtain designation.
  • Prior internship experience within the construction or mining industries or 1 - 3 years of experience in civil, geotechnical, or mining engineering focused on detailed design, site investigation, and technical communication.
  • Preference given to those with surveying, mining operations, mine waste-related and/or reclamation-related experience.
  • Competency using and willingness to learn relevant computer aided design and surveying software such as: Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Carlson, Maptek Vulcan, Hexagon Minesight/MinePlan, Deswik CAD, etc.
  • Competency using and willingness to learn relevant field equipment such as: Computer tablet, Trimble Total Stations, tripods/range poles, prisms/targets, etc.
