Reporting to the VP of People, the Payroll Manager oversees, implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing systems to ensure efficient, timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions. The successful individual will identify any areas of improvements within payrolls, mentor the members of the payroll team, leads the implementation of new payroll processes and systems

Main Responsibilities:

  • Coaches, mentors, and supports Payroll Analyst(s) to enhance their skills and knowledge, ensuring high performance and professional growth.
  • Acts as a resource and guide, promoting a culture of continuous learning within the payroll team.
  •  Reviews and signs off on payroll files and supporting documentation, including bi-weekly control books, registers, and monthly pension registers.
  • Responds to employee queries on payroll related matters and communicates constantly with payroll providers to solve various issues while providing a balanced approach to routine and complex issues.
  • Responsible for reviewing the processes and files completed by the Payroll Analyst(s) once payroll is balanced. Review supporting documentation, bi-weekly control books, main control books, registers etc.
  • Communicates and works closely with external payroll providers, tax advisors and internal teams (legal, tax, procurement) to implement Payroll in new countries/legal entities to ensure compliance with local legislation.
  • Initiates and completes the application process for Unemployment and Tax Withholding accounts in various US States
  • Ensures all Payrolls (National and International) are compliant as per local legislation and internal procedures.
  • Reviews and signs off on the monthly pension registers. 
  • Acts as first point of contact for all payroll providers when changes are requested and implemented.
  • Responsible for the payroll audit and for responding to requests from internal and external auditors related to payrolls, 401K plan, Canadian pension plans or any other areas managed by Payroll.
  • Collaborates with various internal and external teams to ensure compliance of the 401K plan to federal legislation. Files annual reports with government authorities.

Position Requirements:

  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) and/or Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designations
  • University degree ideally in Business, Finance, Accounting or equivalent
  • A minimum of 10 years of directly related work experience in payroll.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to develop and support team members.
  • Excellent Supervisory skills and experience
  • Able to Multi tasks on a daily basis
  • Experience with multi-national payroll (particularly U.S.) is an asset.
  • Exposure to Ceridian payroll systems (Dayforce) is an asset.
  • In-depth understanding of Microsoft Office Suite with advanced knowledge of MS Excel
  • Good understanding of financial concepts and facility working with numbers
  • Solid analytical experience and problem-solving skills combined with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, handle conflict and manage stressful situations.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent multitasking abilities, with a proven track record of managing shifting priorities in a high-pressure environment..
  • Advanced technical and reporting skills
  • In-depth understanding of Microsoft Office Suite with advanced knowledge of MS Excel
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is preferred.

The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain a Reliability clearance.
