Position Summary:
A Research Associate II position is available at Dr. Yun Rose Li's laboratory at Beckman Research Institute, City of Hope. Dr. Li is a physician scientist in radiation oncology whose research integrates genetic epidemiology, innovative sequencing and bioinformatics technologies, molecular biology tools, and biomarker studies from patients enrolled in clinical trials to better understand the role of oxidative stress in cancer risk and treatment response. The prospective candidates should be highly self-motivated, creative, and capable of working independently and in a team.
Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Yun Rose Li, or designate, the Research Associate II performs a variety of routine and increasingly complex research experiments in cell and molecular biology. The ideal candidate must exhibit a can-do attitude, express strong desire to learn and be self-motivated. Such an individual would be expected to direct the work of a laboratory or undertake research projects in collaboration with the academic supervisor, contribute original ideas to the laboratory research; standardize new techniques and train staff on these techniques; perform specialized procedures and prepare written reports of laboratory experimental methods.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Performs a variety of routine and non-routine laboratory research experiments. Records and validates results for accuracy and completeness.
- Troubleshoots procedures if experiment results are unexpected or unsatisfactory. Recommends alternative procedures.
- Responsible for accurately recording work performed including results and methodology. Calculates, compiles, and analyzes data obtained from work performed.
- Independently evaluates research data and initiates alternative approaches to improve the quality of results by providing input to overall research design. Train's lab staff in specialized procedures, equipment, and theoretical concepts behind unique tests.
- May contribute to the preparation of manuscripts by describing methods and specialized techniques. Keeps abreast of new and improved techniques.
- Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with each procedure(s) by utilizing safety procedures and guidelines in handling, storage and disposal of bio-hazardous, infectious and toxic material.
- A Bachelor's degree in life sciences, chemistry, computer/physical sciences, or related field with 2 years of research/laboratory experience or a Master's degree in life sciences, chemistry, computer/physical sciences, or related field with 1 year of research/laboratory experience
- Prior work experience in a cell/molecular biology lab or exposure through coursework to coding in languages such as R, Python and Matlab strongly preferred
