Job Summary:
Claims Business Intelligence and Analytics Team
This area is responsible for creating a data-driven culture, through the
development and execution of our organizational data analytics strategy,
combing people, processes, and technology to deliver value from data to the
Claims organization. We enable self-service analytics while focusing on
innovations, automation, efficiency gains, and agility to support organizational
growth and Markel's 10-FIVE-1 strategy.
Data Analytics
Positions in this sub-functional area of the Claims Business Intelligence and
Analytics Team are responsible for designing automated operational analytics
models, increasing data visibility and access for business teams through
operational reports, self-service data tools, and managerial dashboards.
The Markel Claims Analytics Team is looking for individuals who are passionate about data analytics, automation, and data-driven business decision-making. As a Senior Data Advisor, you will be a "data generalist" and "communication specialist" who can partner across business teams to execute on the highest leverage opportunities to democratize data, conduct data-driven analysis, direct creation of self-service data analytics tools to automate manual processes.
As a Senior Data Advisor, you will be working side-by-side with "data specialists" such as data engineers and software engineers, as well as business leaders across Claims. Successful candidates need to possess both business and technical backgrounds and share a growth mindset and a desire to constantly grow their data and analytics skills through continuous learning and
development. At Markel's Claims Organization, we expect our analytics
consultants to do more than just design visual representations of data. Your
responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Collaborate with the senior leadership team in Claims organization to support operational needs with data and analytical solutions
- Gather requirements for successful dashboard design, data visualizations, creation of self-service data tools, and ad-hoc reports on a timely basis and based on business prioritization requirements
- Expected to understand Claims' needs and goals, translating them into technical needs including but not limited to data aggregations, data calculation, analytical design, and the ultimate goal of data consumption for and by the business partners
- Consult business partners on how they can execute their strategies successfully using data analytics and data automated solutions
- Partner closely with teams across the Claims to gain a full understanding of analytical and/or reporting objectives to provide self-service data tools and/or reporting
- Through proactive collaboration with business partners, assist data engineers in creating clean, reliable, and scalable "single-source-of-truth" data sets, to address data issues in upstream systems, document data lineage, business logic, and KPI definitions.
- Manage a broad stakeholder base, prioritize effectively, and deliver at the speed of relevance
- Be an evangelist to promote understanding and usage of data-driven decision making to fully leverage the power of data and automation
- Expected to keep up with emerging trends and technologies in big data and analytics and keep abreast of latest related research
- Mentor and train other less senior team members on business intelligence and analytics
- Be comfortable communicating with a non-technical audience
- Excellent problem-framing, problem-solving and agile project management skills, willingness to be flexible and adapt to change quickly
- Report and monitor progress towards team goals
- On a daily basis assist with administrative duties related to access, sharing and consuming data visualizations and/or reports
Baseline Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, mathematics, engineering or other quantitative fields
- 3+ years of data analytics and business intelligence experience
- Project management, agile, and mentoring/teaching others experience preferred
- Insurance industry knowledge is strongly preferred
- Advanced knowledge of best practices for designing meaningful dashboards and SQL logic
- Strategic and tactical problem-solving skills
- Driven by a strong sense of curiosity and creativity
- Design theory experience preferred
- Experience working with structured and unstructured data, dispersed data with various formats, sizes and/or locations
- Experienced in leading and coordinating multifunctional activities to support dashboard design between various business product lines across claims organization
- Ability to "tell a story" with data visualization and translating millions of records into meaningful and actionable metrics
- An understanding of the data engineering discipline is a plus
- Excellent interpersonal skills, relationship building, and project management and agile skills
- High level of attention to detail
