Encodia is a rapidly growing platform company that is developing a new generation of protein analysis tools based on single-molecule protein sequencing. Our goal is to make protein sequencing easy and ubiquitous by using a novel reverse-translation technology that turns peptide sequences into DNA. The DNA can be read by a DNA sequencer, providing a path to breakthrough proteomics research at a scale that is not practical or cost-effective using current technologies.

Job Summary

Encodia is seeking a self-starting, cross-functional, instrumentation engineer to join our growing team and help commercialize our first on-market platform. This engineering position will be asked to work on a wide range of challenges and is expected to have a big impact on the go-to-market platform.

As we prepare for Encodia's Commercial Instrument, an instrumentation engineer will help us identify design changes and optimize our current system architecture. This engineer will help design, test, characterize, troubleshoot and document learnings for a variety of subsystems needed for Encodia's first commercial platform.

Requirements

• Contribute to instrument design activities for mechanical, fluidic, and thermal subsystems to improve instrument performance
• Contribute to reagent consumable design in conjunction with manufacturing partners
• Work in a cross-functional team to refine instrument requirements, solve system integration issues, and implement engineering improvements
• Develop system and subsystem tests to verify an instrument meets requirements and specifications
• Characterize instrument performance and troubleshoot performance issues
• Design specialized test fixtures and assembly fixtures
• Create and maintain documentation including CAD models, part drawings, assembly instructions, and bill of materials
• Utilize change management practices to drive safety, quality, efficiency, and cost improvements

What you bring to this role

• BS with 5+ years of experience or MS with 3+ years of experience, in an Engineering discipline
• Skilled in 3D CAD and ASME/ISO Standard Drawings, including dimensioning, surface treatment and tolerancing
• Experience in developing instrument systems that integrate chemical, biochemical, or molecular biology assays with hardware and software
• Hands-on experience building hardware systems that include fluidic, mechanical and thermal control subsystems
• Skilled at troubleshooting hardware subsystems
• Experience with injection molding and/or design for manufacturing a plus
• Rapid prototyping utilizing 3D printing and quick turn manufacturing shops
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; organized and efficient
• Creative, proactive, excellent team player with solid communication skills; ability to multitask and work independently

Highly Desirable

• PhD with 1+ years experience in an engineering discipline
• Proficiency in programming in python or other object-oriented language is a plus
• Experience with experimental design and statistical data analysis is a plus
• Experience with computational modeling of fluidic, thermal and/or mechanical systems
• Strong understanding of material/chemical compatibility
• Thorough understanding of the product development process and experience taking products from concept through commercialization
