The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Description
Ideal candidate will reside in Massachusetts. This position requires travel throughout Eastern Mass to conduct an average of 3 in person agency visits per month. This is a ranged posting. Level offered will be based on candidate experience at manager discretion.

As an Inland Marine Underwriter in property casualty insurance, you'll develop, grow and maintain diversified books of business while working closely with agents and brokers to assess risks, determine premiums, set conditions and negotiate deals that maximize profitability and meet business goals.

• Strategic Account Manager : As part of your portfolio strategy, you'll ensure a profitable book of Inland Marine business and growing successful agent and broker relationships and pursuing renewals
• Problem solver : You'll crunch the numbers and review the data to determine risk selection, premiums, policies and conditions, as well as identify opportunities for improved growth, profit and diversification
• Clear communicator : You'll maintain and nurture successful relationships with agents and brokers, while presenting proposals, negotiating deals and obtaining approvals
• Collaborative teammate : Contributing to overall team success, you'll mentor underwriters in both a technical and professional capacity sharing best practices and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
• Conscientious professional : Understanding that the deal isn't done until the paperwork is complete, you'll document account reviews, state-compliant sign-offs and referrals, letters of authority and follow underwriting guidelines

Responsibilities:

• Risk Selection: Evaluates or assesses the Inland Marine submission by selecting and assessing exposures, determining the premium, policy terms and conditions obtaining approvals creating/presenting the proposal to the agent/broker and successfully negotiating deals.
• Agent/Broker Relationships: Demonstrates a high level of responsiveness and focus on supporting Agents and Brokers objectives through successful negotiations. Develops and maintains the relationship through responsive service, frequent site visits, in person renewal meetings or enhanced knowledge of their customers businesses.
• Portfolio Management: Manages a book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share with preferred brokers.
• Documenting: Documents files in a way that reflects a solid thought process and decision making through comprehensive account reviews, sign-offs and referrals.
• Leadership: Formally and informally guides, mentors, and coaches underwriters in both technical and professional skills.
• Continuous Improvement: Actively participates in continuous improvement by fully engaging in team meetings, generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.

Qualifications

• Intermediate-level knowledge of insurance products/coverage, market segments and marketplace; insurance finance and actuarial concepts; loss control/risk engineering; marketing/selling techniques, regulatory environment and reinsurance;
• Advanced-level knowledge of underwriting, pricing, risk selection, territory management.
• Ability to apply underwriting/appetite, tools, systems, and resources to achieve goals, solve complex problems, establish and build healthy working relationships, participate in mentoring relationships, and negotiate as normally acquired a related bachelor`s degree, five years to 8 years of commercial lines underwriting experience preferred.
• CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
