Job Description
The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation (PJMF) is a philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence and data science solutions to create a thriving, equitable, and sustainable future for all. PJMF works in partnership with public, private, and social institutions to drive progress on our most pressing challenges, including digital health, climate change, broad digital access, and data maturity in the social sector.
About the role:
We are looking for a Strategic Grants Associate to join the PJMF team to advance our mission of driving innovation and positive social impact through technology. The Strategic Grants Associate will acquire hands-on experience in grant management and administration and gain valuable insights into the world of philanthropy, technology, and strategic grantmaking. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work directly with our Strategic Grants teams and a network of grant partners in the philanthropic and tech sectors. You will be an agent of change, supporting the ongoing relationship between the Foundation and our partners by facilitating communication and ensuring the fulfillment of grant obligations.
The Strategic Grants Associate will also be a part of the Rising Leaders for Equity Rotational Program. This two-year professional experience provides exposure across the Foundation and the broader field of philanthropy while providing a holistic professional experience centered on mutual learning, growth, and innovation. The Program Associate cohort will take part in a leadership-oriented curriculum that will equip them with the necessary skills to advance a career in social impact, whether in philanthropy or the broader civil society. Over the course of your tenure, our team will work with you to identify the next step in your career journey, and upon completion of the RL4E program, PJMF will work to support you to continue a legacy of social impact beyond PJMF.Â
Things you’ll do in your first year:
- Collaborate with programmatic teams and grant partners to track project milestones, action items, impact, and reporting requirements.
- Ensure accurate and organized documentation of grant agreements, progress reports, and financial documents, and maintain data in our grant management system and team dashboards.
- Work alongside Analysts and Strategic Grants leaders to gain exposure" to the grant development and review process.
- Draft team communications, provide schedule and calendar support, and support logistics for points of engagement between PJMF and grant partners.
- Draft external presentation materials (slide decks, documents, external communications, graphics).
- Support the creation of knowledge products and maintain knowledge repository, to include performing research on special topics that will advance PJMF’s work.
- Gain exposure to other areas of PJMF and the philanthropic field through the Rising Leaders for Equity Program.
What you need to be successful:
- Study in the areas of public policy, business, or nonprofit management; or equivalent professional experience in a related field.
- Ability to transition between independent, project-based, and team-based work with ease from a digital location outside of an office.
- Strong written, oral, visual communication and analytical skills.
- Capability to analyze and distill observations, ideas, and feedback into team notes, memos, and visual presentations.
- Proficiency in G-Suite applications, including Google Slides.
- Demonstrated understanding or interest in tech for good and/or social impact work.
- Genuine enthusiasm for building a human-centered, tech-enabled future where everyone thrives.
- Work eligibility – Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
What we offer:
- Compensation - We anticipate the starting salary range for this role to be $60,000, with flexibility based on graduate-level applicants.
- Health Coverage – We offer Foundation-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and their spouses or domestic partners and dependents. In addition, we provide HSA/FSA plans, life insurance, and short- and long-term disability coverage.
- Long-term Rewards – Our 401(k) retirement plan includes generous matching of up to 6% of annual pay, plus an additional discretionary match at the end of the year.
- Flexible PTO – We offer unlimited paid time off, which allows team members to take the time they need for vacation or illness so they can return to work able to contribute fully to our mission. In addition, the Foundation recognizes 11 paid national holidays per year and may also announce closure for local, regional or state holidays.
- Remote Work Environment - Employees work 100% remotely–but not alone–alongside a community of mature, socially minded professionals. We provide a monthly work support stipend to offset the costs of phone, internet, or co-working space.
- Wellness Support – In addition to our health coverage, we offer access to Ginger, Gympass, Headspace, and SmartSpend Plus, along with financial well-being service providers.
- Parental Leave – We provide up to 6 months of gender-neutral paid leave for parents and caregivers when they have a new addition to their families.
- Learning Reimbursements – We encourage team members to explore development opportunities such as peer learning, internal training, and external activities.
- Philanthropic Gift Matching – We support our team members' personal investments in social impact by matching eligible charitable donations 1:1 up to $1,000 per calendar year.
Employment Dates: June 1, 2024 - June 2026
We look forward to receiving your application and learning more about your vision, potential, and commitment to using AI, technology, and social impact to address critical global challenges.

Core to PJMF’s mission is inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA). We apply the IDEA framework to all we do, from growing a diverse team within the foundation to coalition building with organizations and people around the world, and to democratizing the development and rewards of AI and data. We have built an environment that celebrates the differences in backgrounds and experiences. PJMF invests in activities that lead to greater inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in how AI and data are conceptualized, developed, applied, and deployed. We are applying the same framework as our team grows and expands. We encourage and invite members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply.
